Best of the best
- Pros: At stock speeds, blows away AMD's FX-62. The Core 2 Duo processors are actually (proven) to be more overclockable than the Netburst CPU's. Paired up with a P5W DH Deluxe, I have my E6400 running stable at 3.68ghz (460x8) with the pencil vmch mod done to the motherboard. Without the mod you shouldn't run into trouble until around the 400mhz fsb mark (giving you 3.2ghz.) I suggest you atleast get a good air cooling solution if you are going to be overclocking. Currently, with such a high overclock, my cpu runs (on the nautilus 500 WC kit) 31*c idle and 35*c under full load.
If anyone is wondering, newegg is shipping the E6400 B2's which are more overclockable than the B1's that most etailers are selling.
- Cons: NONE! DON'T BE FOOLED ABOUT THE 2M L2 CACHE! THERE IS ONLY BETWEEN .03-3% IN PERFORMANCE VS. 4M L2 CACHE!
- Other Thoughts: Save the money and get a good value ram 2GB kit unless you are going for world records. The increase in FSB has more impact on your memory performance than the speed of your ram itself. Check out anandtech's conroe review for suggested value ram kits. Make sure you get one of the best motherboards, currently the most overclockable boards are:
975X: Asus P5W DH Deluxe, Intel Bad Axe 965: Asus P5B Deluxe
You'll get better results with one of these motherboards paired up with this cpu vs. E6600 with a mediocre board.
Hope this helps!
Overclocking
- Pros: Overclocking on this CPU with the stock heatsink is impressive. Stock clock is 266FSB * 8 = 2.13GHz... On an Asus P5B deluxe with Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800 and at stock voltage, easily OC's to 400FSB * 7 for 2.8Ghz fully stable. At 1.3625V (stock is 1.2V) runs at 3.2Ghz fully stable but runs awfully hot with stock heatsink. Plenty of headroom with this one!
- Cons: No integrated memory controller for intel yet :'(
- Other Thoughts: Your results may vary with OC'ing, but I would put money on 95% of these easily hitting 2.8Ghz at stock voltage.

Nice proc, Bad fan
- Pros: Very nice, a big step up for me from my P4. Able to overclock easily, now running at 2.8 with stock HSF. Excuse me if I sound like I'm behind on things, but I don't know how I survived before without multi-core capabilities.
- Cons: The HSF. Where should I start? That the plastic pins feel like they'll break after the first application? Or that the noise generated sounds like I have a 747 jet turbine in my computer? Or the lack of actual cooling?
Right now at 2.8 GHz, I have it idling at about 31 C. When the processor starts working, however, temps shoot up well into the 60s.
Currently waiting until I can save up enough for Zalman CPU fan.
A great CPU
- Pros: It's cheap and very overclockable. On the stock fan I got these babies to 3.2ghz and I'm planning to go more. I have absolutely no problems for a year and a couple of months that I've owned this processor.
- Cons: It can't go to 4.0ghz on the stock fan?
- Other Thoughts: If you're getting a new processor then this is good. It's pretty fast if you OC it so it's good for gamers and even office computers it's still good.
Want a E6400 for cheap?
- Pros: I have three Intel E6400's up for sale
Specs are identical to these from Newegg They have been used for about 4 months, under light use Here's the link: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=234882 PM Me on Notebook review, and we can make a deal.
- Cons: I had to remove these from my 3 Optiplex 745's cause I needed to make some money.
- Other Thoughts: I have not overclocked this processor, but from what I have heard it can be clocked up to 3.6Ghz, which is a pretty substantial overclock.

Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) With Intel VT, one hardware platform functions as multiple "virtual" platforms. For business, Intel VT offers improved manageability, limiting downtime and maintaining worker productivity by isolating computing activities into separate partitions. In the home, Intel VT allows creating unique user environments for multiple family members using the same platform simultaneously.
|
 |
Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology Support Multiple performance modes enable optimum performance at the lowest power, using real-time dynamic switching of the voltage and frequency between multiple performance modes based on CPU demands.
|
 |
Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology (Intel EM64T) Intel EM64T provides an enhancement to Intel 32-bit architecture by enabling the desktop processor platform to access larger amounts of memory. With appropriate 64-bit supporting hardware and software, platforms based on an Intel processor supporting Intel EM64T can enable use of extended virtual and physical memory.
