Great Processor...
- Pros: (Note: No overclocking tested or planned)
I am coming from a mildly overclocked E8600, and I wasn't expecting too much of a difference, but it really surprised me. Improvements all around - especially with x264 encoding... I went from 35-40FPS to 85-95FPS. Partially due to the 2 added cores over my old C2D, but also strongly due to the enhancements in the architecture.
Gaming improvements abound, as well as the general feel of the system. Windows 7 runs even faster than it did before on this new processor.
For anyone ready to take the leap into the i7 realm, this would be the one to grab.
Recommended for: Users of systems based on older or slower C2D's, or systems predating C2D.
- Cons: Obviously, the 1156 socket is incompatible with the first i7 iteration, instantly alienating a group of users. (Thankfully, I'd say that the 860 isn't a reason to abandon any 1st gen. i7's)
Needing to purchase a new, expensive motherboard and DDR3 RAM knocks an egg off the total experience. The CPU could be a little less expensive, but it is only one day on the market.
Not recommended for: Existing i7 users as the motherboard upgrade will put the price/performance improvements squarely out of whack. (Also very fast C2D Extreme users may wish to stick with their investments as well)
- Other Thoughts: Paired with a P7P55D, PNY Geforce 260, and 8GB RAM, and she runs Windows 7 flawlessly.
Fast and Cool
- Pros: Fast in multithreaded applications
Only 95W Cool temperatures Easily overclocks
- Cons: Retail heatsink is small. Very small.
- Other Thoughts: Runs cool, but purchase a better heatsink if you plan to overclock.

Stock heat sink sucks.
- Pros: This is a fast processor, it cuts through all the applications I can throw at it like a hot knife through butter.
- Cons: The stock heat sink is totally inadequate, just at normal stock speeds in a well ventilated case the cpu would overheat and cause the system to suddenly shut off after about a half hour of running, the heat sink is literally not even as thick as my thumb, so if you get the processor you will need to buy a third party heat sink to go with it.
Good price for the perfomance
- Pros: This CPU performance very well. It is not the faster thing out there, but it is very very fast. The turbo mode works well for limited core apps. Additionally, it does not get that hot or sucks that much juice. Paired with a good cooler, you will have no issues with this CPU.
- Cons: None
- Other Thoughts: This is a good mid range CPU. I would not say it is a good choice for a high end gaming rig due to the PCI-e being on die and the limiting factor for the x16 PCI-e bus in multi GPU situations, but it is good for the mid price rigs with no SLI/Crossfiring. If you are looking at a high powered rig with multiple GPU's and the like, you may want to look at the Bloomfield chips, but don't let the dual channel (this proc) versus triple channel (Bloomfields) memory difference sway you. I have not seen any stats showing that making a difference in performance ... yet (6 cores cpus may push that kind of memory).
Great example of why Intel is the market leader
- Pros: Powerful and energy efficient.
Great value ... Price/Performance ratio is stellar. Gives you what you need without what you don't.
- Cons: There are not a lot of cooler options out there for the LGA1156 socket yet.
Doesn't clean my house for me...
- Other Thoughts: I am a photographer, not a gamer ... So I am not the one to ask if you're looking for a gamer's point of view.
Check the reviews out there... Unless you are a seriously hardcore gamer, the 8xx series is the way to go... You are not likely to notice the difference between the dual channel (8xx) and triple channel (9xx) memory. Unless you are running at least two very powerful video cards, a well thought out P55 (i7 8xx) system usually matches or beats an X58 (i7 9xx) system performance wise.
For those of you complaining about the lack of triple channel support on MB's, the dual channel memory controller is built into this CPU, so it's just not gonna happen. The i7 9xx (x58) supports triple channel because those CPUs have a triple channel controller.
