The WD TV HD Media Player is an ultra-compact, high-definition (HD) USB 2.0 media player that attaches to an entertainment unit through a variety of audio/video interfaces and supports playback of major audio, video, and image file formats. It supports high-definition video playback of up to 1080p through an HDMI connection or standard definition for TVs with lower capabilities. High-fidelity digital audio is supported from an optical interface (Toslink). Two USB ports are available to connect USB storage devices. The included remote control lets you quickly browse through your media library and configure settings.

Pros: Now THIS is what I've been looking for in a media player, at the right price! I had previously purchased a different media player that didn't live up to my expectations. All I can say is give this puppy a serious look. Its newly on the market and plays my movie files beautifully. I could go on and on about it, but if you visit a couple of sites, they'll explain more about what this can and cannot do. Maddhat dot com gives a good in depth review. forum dot videohelp dot com also has a good thread going, just search for the model number. 1. HDMI output, Toslink optical audio out. 2. Two USB 2.0 ports (one is on the side, the pictures don't show that 3. Smallish remote, but it works fine and all the buttons actually do something, compared to the other Media player I had ordered and returned cause it sucked. 4. Firmware upgrade capability. But none yet available since its so new. 5. LOTS of options available for setup of video/audio/picture viewing. Does slideshows.
Cons: 1. Mine didn't come with a manual (maybe I didn't look hard enough in the box?). But go to WD website and you can download the manual. Its actually very good and quite extensive with detailed info on all the features.
Other Thoughts: 1. Check out other websites for reviews, and check out WD manual online. This should cinch the deal for you if you're looking for an inexpensive MP. 2. Now I don't have to build a HTPC just to play my ripped and downloaded movies! That money is now going towards my new plasma TV! 3. Got it at a B&M store for just under a benjamin. But regardless of price, buy it, you won't be disappointed. 4. Ummm...this puppy is small, check out the dimensions. It basically fits in the palm of your hand. 5. The remote has an 'eject' button, which will allow you to shut down your USB device (if you have 2 connected, it will let you select either one) before you disconnect it. This is actually pretty handy. 6. Okay, so I'm ranting. I'm very happy with this product. Does more than I'll probably ever use it for. Packed with features, does the job very well. I love it. 'Nuff said.

Cheap alternative to tvix 6500 or 7000

Pros: Small, lightweight, portable. No fan. Sleek looking. Makes a nice MP3 player for all your music in the living room, at $100 for the unit and $40-150 for external hard drive is a little much, might as well plug in your ipod into your stereo.
Cons: ISO's skip, repeat, or play random clips throughtout the movie. WD support said that this unit does nto support iso. Converting everything you have to MKV is time takes up a huge amount of time, is lossy, does not let you keep menus, and is more trouble than making DVD backups. WD support is non existent. Just check their FAQ's or knowledge base. If you are thinking about backup up your BD or HD dvd's, think again, a lot of them use the VC1 video encoding wich this unit is not compatible with. Playing MOV,AVI and MPEG is hit and miss depending on the file. The files all play fine on the PC but this device chokes on 80% of them. I bought this from a local retailer 3 weeks ago and returning it today. Do yourself a favor, stay away from this piece of junk or buy it from somewhere that doesn't have a restocking fee. No network connection. No internal hard drive capability. Might as well go with a Popcorn A100.
Other Thoughts: I own a DViCO TViX HD M-6500A also . The WD unit doesn't even compare. I can backup whole DVD's to the unit in the original video_ts folder and not have to convert it, edit it, and otherwise waste my time. You also get the full menu's so you don't have to go hunting for extras or other functional part of the DVD's. The 6500 unit also plays blue rays WITHOUT NEEDING CONVERSION EITHER and will pass the dolby HD and DTS HD directly throught he HDMI cable. The 6500 will also down convert for you to the optical or coaxial digital outputs to be compatible with your receiver. It also has an internal Hard drive that can handle up to 1.5 TB SATA drives and you can add USB 2.0 hard drives to it too. Some guy even attached one of neweggs blue ray readers to the 6500 internal sata and played blue ray movies directly from the drive. To top things off...no more sneaker net...you can dump files right onto your 6500 which has an optional wifi connection or a built in 1000 base T ethernet.

Pros: I have installed 10 of these in retail locations as a advertising media distriibution to HD TVS. I coupled it with the WD 500G pocket drive. Using MP4HD uncompressed video the clarity is great.
Cons: You must update the firmware right out of the box. This is a must! Another thought is using Apple M4V disables the FF and REW ability. It is picky on ISO file playing.
Other Thoughts: Remote seems a little cheap. But if you're debating between the three big players WD, APPLE, or LaCie Black play this one wins in all catagories. Lowest price and custom tailor your drive size for 1/2 the money!

Pros: Plays every file i have put to it. I just love this. Movies, Pictures, Music, all at a touch of the remote. Cant say enough. You will love it to!
Cons: NONE !!!!!!!!
