Seagate Barracuda ST500DM002 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5
  • Verified Owner
  • Owned For: more than 1 year

Pros: I'm the IT Dept. manager for a mid-size business with 30 years of IT experience. I research my products thoroughly before purchase, and track their lifespan and usage carefully. I've purchased over 50 of these drives for users in or office over the past few years. Failure rate has been less than 5%, and performance has always been quite good.

Cons: Only 16MB of cache? Most drives come with 32 or 64, now. Wish Seagate would provide more firmware update utilities.

Other Thoughts: I will buy and use these drives in all our corporate workstations until price of SSD's comes down a little more. They meet all our needs for capacity, speed, and reliability. I don't understand all the negative reviews!?

Thecus N8810U-G Diskless System Rackmount Network Storage

1 out of 5 eggs Do not buy until Thecus fixes their firmware bugs! 03/05/2015

This review is from: Thecus N8810U-G Diskless System Rackmount Network Storage

Pros: Great capacity, comes with sliding rack rails.

Cons: I have a brand-new Thecus N8810U-G NAS updated with the latest firmware (2.05.07 as of 3/5/2015), and it has a major issue. In the GUI under System Network -> Networking -> Domain name, it defaults to "thecus.com", and you are unable to change that to your actual domain or workgroup name (i.e., "companyname"). The device won't allow you to change that field, it gives an error message. It worked fine on my previous N8800. As a result you cannot join this to a standard workgroup or domain and access it's shares via it's hostname (i.e., "\\N8810U-G"). It's a big issue and Thecus hasn't fixed it yet, there are many other reports in their forums. Have had a ticket open for a week with no resolution, even tried installing SSH and changing it from the back-end, but I'm not enough of a Linux expert to figure it out. Device is a paperweight until this can be resolved! :(

Other Thoughts: Do not buy until Thecus fixes their firmware bugs.

Seagate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive
  • Owned For: 1 week to 1 month

Pros: Great performance and capacity for the price

Cons: Bought one drive and it had been working great for months. So I took the plunge and ordered six more. Of those six, one died after less than six hours of use (clicking, no longer detected by Windows), then a second died within 24 hours of use. Reading the reviews it seems others have had similar experiences. I'm concerned about the long-term safety of my data on these drives. Seagate needs to ramp up their quality control.

Other Thoughts: I'll still buy these, because on paper they fit my needs exactly. But they need to do something about the reliability.
