Is the packaging this drive is sent in good? I have seen some bad packaging in the past.

The one I received the hard drive in had decent packaging. The hard drive itself was sealed in a transparent envelope with a sealed tube inside as well containing a drying agent to prevent any moisture. The package contained quite a few inflated bags to prevent the hard drive from moving around and getting bumped. Take all of that for what you will as it's just my anecdote, but my hard drive came in the mail in perfect condition.

looking at hgst and one is labeled ea model. What does the ea reference to?

EA = Extended Availability ... rated for 24x7 Uptime

Will this drive replace my existing 500 mb drive HGST HTS725050A7E630 in my Lenovo ThinkPad W540? If so, will the performance be similar?

I bought mine as a replacement t for my ThinkPad and it works great.
