Question 1

I want to install this in an HP Envy TS17 notebook and make it the boot drive.  Does this SSD come with migration software?

Nope. Just a bare drive. Clonezilla is a Linux program that is pretty easy to use and extremely effective (and free). LiLi (Linux Live USB creator) can make a Bootable USB stick that you can use with Clonezilla to clone your drive exactly.  Google how to use Clonezilla and you'll see it's not that tough!

Great drive though.  Amazingly fast. Massive upgrade.

Question 2

Received the drive but no usb data transfer cable?

I have purchased a few of these drives and none of the Samsung SSD's have USB cables, they are internal drives and motherboards often come with their own SATA cables.  Besides, a SATA to USB cable is a special cable due to the SSD's power requirement. Just search "SATA to USB" on Newegg and it will pull some up.

Is this just like an HDD, like can I just put this in, and then put my windows 7 disk in and install windows just like a would with an HDD?

Yes, this will behave just like a hard disk drive (HDD). I am using it that way on a Linux box where this device is the only "drive" in the computer. I plugged mine into the only slot in an Intel NUC and it makes for a nifty, power efficient file server for my other Linux boxes.

Does the product include a 7 mm to 9.5 mm spacer?

No spacer. It was the bare drive and if I remember correctly, four screws to mount it with. Otherwise the only things in the box are a small manual and a CD with outdated utility software.

The drive is absolutely fantastic though. I easily recommend it.

Question 5

Will this replace the hard drive in my desk top? My hard drive is failing and I want more speed and not problems?

Yes.  Assuming your desktop is relatively modern (last 5-6 years) it will be able to support the SATA interface of this drive.  Although older machines will not be able to take full advantage of the speed, since a SATA3 connector is required for maximum utilization.  Also, most desktops are designed with a 3.5 drive in mind instead of this smaller laptop form-factor.  You will want to also purchase a 2.5-to-3.5 drive adaptor as well if you purchase this drive.  That aside, this is an excellent and speedy drive that I'd heartily recommend.

This will work for a desktop, right?

Yes, this will work for any desktop. Depends on what you want to run it though, If you're planning on running it as main drive you'll have to install OS on to it, if you're planning on expanding your memory space and want to run it as a second drive then there is no need for another OS installation.

Question 7

IF POWER TO THE UNIT IS OFF FOR A PERIOD OF TIME OR THE TEMPERATURE CHANGES, WILL YOU STILL KEEP YOUR INFO ON YOUR SSD?

Your data is safe from anything short of a super strong electromagnetic field. This is one of the safest forms of data storage available. Because there are no moving parts it's less prone to failure, temp changes etc etc.

Do I still need to buy an operating system if I purchase this?

Well, that depends on how you plan to use the drive. If you are building a new computer from scratch, then yes, you'll need an operating system.  If you are just adding this drive for additional storage, then no.  However, if you are using this drive to replace an existing drive that has the operating system on it (Typically C:) then no you really don't.  You should be able to reinstall windows on this drive and reactivate it.

Also, another option, the Samsung DVD comes with a great program that can copy your current configuration to this drive, however, you need to have the usb adaptor, or a free hotswap bay, or internally hook this drive up to run that migration tool before you disconnect the old drive.

Can it be used with a mid 2012 Mac Pro desktop?

According to Apple you have "Four 3.5-inch cable-free, direct-attach drive bays with built-in independent 3Gb/s Serial ATA channels; four internal drive carriers included"

This should work just fine.  (I use this drive in a 2011 Macbook Pro).  HOWEVER, you may want a drive adapter to fit the 3.5" drive carriers.

You will notice a nice performance bump if you are using the 7200 RPM drives.  Run 3 in RAID 0 and really have some fun!!!

Does this drive come with a 2.5 to 3.5 inch adapter? I'm planning on upgrading my spin-disk equivalent.

No, the drive adapter is not included.  You need to purchase one separately if you plan to mount this in a 3.5" slot.
