Intel Core i7-3970x sandy bridge

Pros: This processor is very powerful and will handle anything I do to it. I am able to run a triple monitor set up with numerous 3d applications running at once along with 2-3 high end games. the multi tasking on this this is pretty ridiculous.

Cons: I was disappointed to find out after a few hours of research elsewhere that this processor can only handle up to 40gb of total ram. you get the blue screen if you put more then that.

Other Thoughts: while this is a great processor their are far better ones out their now that weren't out when i first got this.

AMAZING PROCESSOR

Pros: Coming from a I7 3820 to a 3970x gained 30 frames a second on the New Tomb Raider game even using 2 old GTX 480 sli power hogs, WOW. Running Arma 3 is amazing also, I got this Processor from another vendor, so I did not pay 1 grand for it, not even close. Newegg is still a great place to shop. This Processor should last me 5 years. Farcry 3 runs and looks amazing on this system. Have not had time to Overclock yet, may not for a while. If you can get this processor for the 600 to 700 dollar range go for it. Very happy!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I will be upgrading my GTX 480 sli config when Nvidia comes out with the GTX 800 series, I have always keep my video cards for 5 years. I cant imagine what the newest video card can do with this processor. My GTX 480's are bottlenecking, but still running amazing.

system specs are

Asus Sabertooth x79
Intel I7 processor 3970x
2 GTX 480 sli
Dell 30 inch monitor

Aw inspiring!

Pros: I laugh at all the people who claim that this chip is too expensive. How its overkill. I would buy this beast if I could afford it in a heartbeat. This processor isn't meant for the average user. Its meant for the enthusiast, the users that have a passion for building and tweaking the best systems for the best results. Both Intel and AMD sell chips that fit in most any budget so I don't fault Intel for pricing this unit in this price range.

Cons: N/A

Other Thoughts: I currently run a 4670k and a 4770k but I will soon add this to my stable. I like that this is a Sandy Bridge-E because of the thermal tolerance it will take while clocking it over 5Mhz. I've seen very impressive numbers with it on a custom water loop. When tax time hits in Feb of '14 I will be buying, and I won't be embarrassed to spend the money. Some of us still spend hours getting that last few MHz and work to keep it stable.

Raw, bleeding-edge x86/x64 performance!

Pros: I won't repeat what everyone else has listed as a pro for this processor. Let's just say that they are correct for the most part.

Be prepared for some serious cooling for this. 150w processors tend to get hot :D

I use a Corsair H100i and it keeps it at 32C idle and about 54C full-load (78 degree ambient - very good airflow).

You will not find a faster x86/x64 processor on a single-socket package.

Cons: The price, but that's what you pay for enthusiast-grade, bleeding-edge technology.

OP much

Pros: Quite possibly the fastest processor out at the moment.

Cons: See other thoughts.

Other Thoughts: Obviously this is like absolute top of the line computing procssors but how much do you really need it. Unless your career is hased upon video editing/encoding you do not truthfully need this. With the new haswell processors you can get plenty of performance out of the 4770k with about a 700$ price drop. Be smart with your money ppl and know what its meant for before you buy it.

Beast of a proce$$or

Pros: This is the best CPU out there as far as power, performance, and future-proofing.

Cons: PRICE!!!!! It is obviously ridiculously overpriced, even for the best CPU there is.

Other Thoughts: I have really been waiting a LONG time for my current build. I'm an IT professional during the day, so I'm not just the average spoiled kid who likes to have the best. I actually know the value of good hardware.
My last PC ran on a Pentium 4 3.4Ghz w/ HT; it lasted me nearly 9 years before the mobo died, thereby providing the excuse I'd been waiting for to build my next rig.
This CPU is THE MOST POWERFUL, but NOT the most economical by any means. I bought it to be what any CPU should be considered as, the backbone of my beast of a computer.
I use my computer for research, "TV" (online viewing), DVD and Blu-Ray playback, some video editing (very little), listening to great music, and of course GAMING.
So far, I have not broken 30% CPU usage under normal use; that includes running games like Crysis, Crysis 2, Batman: Arkham City, and CoD: Black Ops on highest settings. This is obviously a beast of a processor,
so don't spend the money if you do not intend to use it. In fact, it's overkill for even intense gaming for at least the next year or so for sure. For current games, there are several less expensive i7's available that,
when paired with a powerful and new enough graphics card, will perform at highest settings just fine.
Make no mistake, the 3970x is for those who want their build to be fully capable of handling whatever they wish to throw at it for quite a while to come and do not mind spending the extra money to have that assurance.
Is it insanely overpriced, to the point of angering me? YES
Is it fully capable of doing WHATEVER I will want from it for at least the next 6 years? YES
This is NOT the chip you buy if you plan on upgrading any time within the next 4 years, because you WILL be WASTING YOUR MONEY if you do.

My current build (pre-GPU upgrade):
NZXT Phantom PHAN-001BK Case w/ all possible fans
i7 3970x CPU

performer

Pros: This CPU, on Anandtech (under Benchmarks) out-performs every AMD CPU currently available. This statistic is based upon the 30 benchmark tests the website puts the current CPUs through. The facts in the benchmarks speak for themselves as the numbers don't lie or have opinions.

Cons: Cost is beyond what most will pay for it.

Other Thoughts: The 3930 is more affordable at about 1/2 the price and delivers very similar performance. Also, the Anandtech benchmarks allow one to compare both CPUs and GPUs so that any hobbyist can compare most every available processor to another to determine one's own proc of choice based upon cost and need.
