Very fast and still expensive

Pros: This drive is so very fast it might as well be precognitive. This is the second one I have bought in two years. A little surprised there have not be significant upgrades in that time but I suppose when the product works this well, it will endure.

Cons: Pricey

Update after 3 Years

Pros: 1. Speed is as advertised, when it worked.

Cons: 1. For some reason, performance is severely affected when you put the computer to sleep and wake it up, requiring a reboot to get the speed back. This was fixed in updates, but it took a about a year after it came out.
2. Approximately 8 months into ownership, the BIOS reported the drive as not being bootable. Booted into my back-up drive and was unable to recover data directly from the drive. Had to reformat and install Windows again.
3. Approximately two years into ownership, I came across incredibly bizarre errors in Windows that appeared random and unexplained. Errors gradually became worse (missing files, dependencies, etc.). Was able to move data to back-up drives, but had to reinstall Windows on drive. It could have been a virus, but it was most likely this drive.
4. Nearly three years into ownership, experienced blue screens (IRQ request errors). Crash dump files did not point to any specific library but the operation appeared to be related to the RAID 10 array (the bootable back-up drives). Removed Intel RST drivers, problems persisted. Went into BIOS and shut down all SATA ports on the RAID array. Blue screens stopped but instead the entire computer would lock up. The entire time this issue was happening, the hard drive LED never shut off and was lit solid. Re-enabled SATA ports on RAID array, removed 950 PRO from motherboard, and rebooted into back-up drives. After Windows finished updating (it doesn't get booted into unless this drive is giving me problems), the hard drive LED light actually stayed off in what had seemed liked months. The computer can actually run for longer than 10 minutes without giving errors or locking up entirely, and it runs exactly as it should.

Other Thoughts: This drive is not going back into my rig. It is being replaced with a Western Digital Black NVMe 1TB, since I read a few 960 PRO reviews that were similar to issue #4 I was having. After this, and the printer I had from Samsung that was even worse, I think I'm taking a break from the brand for a while.

M.2 SSD

Pros: Fast read and write speeds.
Perfect for work (Photoshop, video editing etc), does not do much for gaming

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I'd definitely buy another M.2 drive in the future.

Samsung 950 PRO

Pros: The drive is still going strong with over 99% life with 8.2TB written in over 2.5 years (30 months) of use as the main OS and programs drive. Samsung has these rated at 400TB for endurance. Let's face it - the truth is, these drives will last far longer than the rated endurance by Samsung (probably at least a dozen PB or so). Heck, these drives will fail from something else than from the endurance for the vast majority of consumers.

Summary of "good things":
- It is a great drive that I'm sure would be even faster in, say, a dual drive RAID 0 setup. I do not have the luxury of running two of these in my system as my X99 motherboard only has one slot that runs @ PCI-E 3.0x4. The other slot is a PCI-E 2.0x4 slot.
- The drive does not get hot in normal workloads.
- No need for a dedicated heatsink (I bought a Wings PX1 that didn't help much in terms of normal or heavy workload heat). Only extreme loads will require something like that.
- Samsung reliability and attention to detail.
- The drive has a 5 year warranty (though, recent drives have 3 year warranties? Or, is that Newegg messing up the information again?).
- Small form-factor as it is M.2 2280 (22mm wide, 80mm long). It is slightly larger than a stick of gum. Amazing times we live in!

Cons: Most older motherboards (X99 1st generation/release or older for Intel HEDT, Z97 or older for Intel Mainstream, 990FX/990X/970 or older for AMD) might not fully support these drives. Some will support them but you might have to adjust settings in the BIOS or the UEFI.

Other Thoughts: Under benchmark, simulated, or heavy workloads (such as, hammering it with a ton of sequential reads or writes from media files or a ridiculous number of random reads or writes from smaller media files or uncompressing a large 100,000+ files compressed folder) will result in some heat. Does it warrant a heatsink under these loads? Nah. Does it slow performance under heavy workloads? Yep. But again, not enough to warrant the purchase of a Wings PX1 or an EKWB M.2 heatsink.

A heatsink does help under extreme loads. So, unless you are tech reviewer or a benchmarking specialist, I'd say no need for that heatsink. I mean, c'mon, it's just not really something you have to tame with a dedicated heatsink unless you are an Anandtech reviewer putting the drive through the torture test all-the-time. Even reviewers don't put drives under a "normal" state of constant torture.

repeated failure issue solved when installed in NUC with 4th gen Intel processor - after 21 months...

Pros: When it behaves, it is exceptional! but when it misbehaved it was a devil. Very very fast drive. No wait on Windows file search. I believe the repeated failures which required reinstall or return to Samsung have been resolved. After 21 months of distrust it seems that overheat problems have be resolved. Using an Intel NUC 5i5 RYH, in Setup the fan must be set to respond to SSD temperature and not CPU temperature.

Cons: Repeated failure and return for repair - See note

Other Thoughts: Heat problem solved after 21 months. In my case using an Intel NUC 5i5 RYH, within hardware setup the fan must be set to respond to SSD temperature and not CPU temperature. Until now the NUC was very quiet, however with Fan set to respond to SSD temperature, the NUC fan whistles continuously when disk is read or written to. The little computer is significantly more responsive. I believe I can now trust the NUC and Samsung 950Pro.

Fast!

Pros: Yes its fast! performance as it should, installed WIN10 and booted from my Motherboard with no issue ever! Samsung make best software for them also, very easy to use.

Cons: Heat! mines would heat a good bit when in benchmark , i had to order a nice heat-sink from Alpha cool to compensate and it worked. temps rose 75c when stressing it or benchmark but now with the heat-sink temps under 50c when benchmarking

Other Thoughts: still would buy again, maybe the pro next time run them in raid, but defiantly always get some nice cooling for them! unless your just using the drives normally.

Samsung SSD 950 Pro M.2 Warranty Issue

Pros: It's great when it works
While I'm impressed with their technology, I'm puzzled by their poor customer service when it comes to warranty. As such i cannot give them a high recommendation.

Cons: December 2015, I acquired this product. It worked great the the specified speeds until a month ago when I purchased their SSD 960 Pro M.2 1TB.
The latter required an upgrade to Samsung's Magician software the included an upgrade to its firmware, further indicating the firmware of the SSD 950 Pro was out of date and also required upgrading.
Here's the rub; while the firmware appears to proved the S.M.A.R.T. feature, which works, but it also causes issues. In my case the failure of the SSD 950 Pro M.2 512GB. By failure I'm referring to not meeting the specified read/write speeds.
After the firmware upgrade both worked at the specified speeds, but the 950 interface "Magician's" Interface notice dropped from 3 x 4 to 1 x 4. A couple of days later the Read speeds dropped from 2,434 to 837 and the Write speeds from 1,412 to 826.
All attempts to contacting Samsung regarding this issue and warranty have failed!
Note; in my case I have to deal with their Canadian representatives...

Other Thoughts: Caution; Using Magician on Samsung's 840 Pro will cause the SSD to Fail. This is not the case with their 850 Pro SSDs
