Question 1

Would you purchase this over the WD Black NVMe m.2? The only difference is write speeds by like 100MB/s less and the Samsung one here supports NVMe 1.3, which the WD one does not from what I see. What would be the best for me? My slot supports NVMe 1.3 as well as the Sata.

I can't say that I looked at the WD Black NVME drive, but I chose the Samsung over other brands for two reasons, price/performance and warranty length.
I had an Evo 850 256GB M.2 drive that failed within a month.  Samsung was VERY fast to replace it, and it also had a 5 year warranty.  With my new laptop supporting NVME, I chose the Samsung based on  the experience with both fast returns, and excellent performance for my $.  Nothing wrong with Western Digital drives, have used some WD Blue M.2 drives in customer machines where price was more important than overall performance, but I felt Samsung was the better choice than the other models I looked at in this case.

Question 2

Is it worth upgrading a 960?. My 960 is only barely a year old and never have had any problems with it.

I'm afraid I can't speak to that... I went from a SATA drive to NVME simply because my motherboard allowed for it when I upgraded. It's made a huge difference. I'd say save the money, and upgrade down the road when you need to. :)

Question 3

Newbie and first time builder. Will this work on my ASRock X370 Pro4 motherboard? I checked the ASRock support list and didn't see it. My Mobo has a couple M.2 slots. Does it even matter? Is a M.2 an M.2 and it just works?

M.2 is not an M.2 and just works.  The 970 EVO NVME is a M.2 2280 slot.  Looking at your listed motherboard here at Newegg, I found the M.2 specs for your board:

1 x Ultra M.2 Socket (M2_1), supports M Key type 2242/2260/2280 M.2 PCI Express module up to Gen3 x4 (32Gb/s) (with Ryzen Series CPU) or Gen3 x2 (16Gb/s) (with A-Series APU)**
1 x M.2 Socket (M2_2), supports M Key type 2230/2242/2260/2280/22110 M.2 SATA3 6.0Gb/s module
** If M2_1 is occupied, PCIE4 will be disabled.
** Supports NVMe SSD as boot disks
** Supports ASRock U.2 Kit

Basically, your board can support two 2280 NVME drives.  So yes, this drive will work on your motherboard.

So i got a intel core i-7 8700 cpu 3.20ghz motherboard and was wondering if this works on it specifically the 500 gb one and how fast is it cuz i just need something fast?

Can I use this on a PCIe 2.0 Motherboard with legacy BIOS? I have a Dell XPS 435T/9000 with an M.2 to PCIe adapter card and I want to use this drive to boot.

Thank you for contacting us in regards to your question. The M.2 SSD do require UEFI in order to boot from this M.2 SSD but, it also does require for the motherboard itself to support booting from NVMe. Your motherboard would most likely not support this feature at all but, would be able to use the drives for storage. We recommend reviewing the manual of your motherboard or contact the manufacturer for more information.

I would think them being different formats one 960 the other 970 will work separately but if your motherboard excepts Two m.2 They will read separately I think raid configuration Will  not config seeing that they have to be similar and make Different read speeds different Write speed’s!

Will this work on an Asrock Z270 Extreme 4?  It shows it fits P/N SM951 (NVME) 2280 long. I am not sure about the 951 designation

It will definitley fit the board, especially since the 960 evo fits. Getting the board to recognize the ssd was annoying at first but it works perfectly.

how to physically connect this M.2 2280 SSD for OS migration as there is no USB port that conventional SSD can be connected to?  I know Samsung has its own data migration software, but my Q is about the physical connection of this M.2 2280 unit to my current Dell laptop for OS and data migration?

For a laptop (2.5 inch) drive I use something like: StarTech USB3S2SAT3CB USB 3.0 to 2.5" SATA III Hard Drive Adapter Cable.
This second device can do both type drives.
For a desktop (3.5 inch) drive I use what I call a 'toaster', because the above cannot power a desktop size drive; I use something like: Wavlink USB 3.0 to SATA Dual Bay Hard drive Docking Station for 2.5" 3.5"

Question 10

Do I need a controller card?  I have a ASUStek Sabertooth 990FX Rev.2.0 for a mobo.  I know it has a PCIe socket, but unsure whether I also need a controller card...Pretty sure the PCIe is only 2 and not PCIe 3.0

This drive uses an M.2 connector, not a PCIe connector. Most modern motherboards have an M.2 socket, but yours does not appear to. There may be PCIe to M.2 cards you could use, but I have no experience with them. You may also want to consider looking at SATA SSDs which are slower, but have better compatibility.
