Can this be used for a desktop computer and if so does it come with SATA cables?

Yes, it can be used in a desktop. Most modern desktop towers come with hard drive trays that accept both 3.5" mechanical AND 2.5" SSDs by simply using different screw holes in the tray. It does not come with any cables or OEM packaging, just in a static-free bag with foam.

I bought this SSD during Black Friday/Cyber Monday madness ... I got an incredible price! ...  and now, weeks later, I'm starting to think about installing it ... but I've just now noticed that the packaging says "... for LAPTOPS".

Laptops?!?   I wanted to install it on a DESKTOP.

The product description below includes this text:

"The Seagate 600 SSD is tested and verified to work with more than 500 different makes and models of PCs, notebooks, laptops, and ultrathin noteboo computers."

... so ... despite the packaging saying "for LAPTOPS", based on the product info Newegg is communicating on this very page, I *can* install it on a desktop, right?!

Seagate says the 600 Series ST240HM000 2.5" 240GB SATA III is for Laptops, because like most SSDs and laptop hard drives, its width is 2.5", where as older Desktop cases provide only 3.5" wide hard drive bays.

However, SSDs can also used in a Desktop case and are happy anywhere, mounted or laying upside down at the bottom of the case. If your case has a 2.5" bay, mount it there,

For me, initially I wrapped the Seagate SSD in foam and wedged into one of the 3.5" bay. Later, I mounted it and an OCZ Vertex 4 SSD into the excellent Thermaltake AC0014 3.5" HDD Converter for 2.5" SATA & SSD Hard Drives, which is 3.5" wide outside and can accommodate two 2.5" SSDs with aeration space between them. Use straight SATA III cables and straight SATA Power Cables, not right angle cables.

Will this work on desktop computers?

Yes, this is designed as an internal drive. Since it is significantly smaller than a normal HDD, it doesn't fit well with hard drive bays designed for the larger HDDs. I just set mine in and secured it with one screw so it sits in there at an angle, but that's not a huge deal. There might be some kind of adapter out there, so you might try looking into that, too. SSDs are one of the best upgrades you can do to a desktop, highly recommended.

Does this SSD come with the brackets to mount the drive in a desktop computer?

This drive is an bare drive.  It only comes with the drive, no mounting brackets.  If you have a newer case with the removable hard drive trays they sometimes have the holes in the bottom for you to mount SSD's.  I got lucky and mine did.  You may want to check before buying an adapter. Hope this helps.

it's just the solid state drive. used to store data/operating system of your computer. read and write speeds are faster than your typical mechanical hard drive. so if you use it just for your operating system (windows, Linux, Mac) it boots up much faster.

if you mean the adapter to install this in a 3.5" bay, NO. You can buy them cheap, I bought the one that has space for two SSD's.

Well, that depends on the laptop. Most common laptops take 2.5" SATA drives these days, but if your laptop is older it may need an IDE drive or if way newer ultrabook style it may use a different form factor entirely.

If you Google for the specs of your laptop you should be able to find what type of drive it accepts.

Question 10

Does the drive come with cables necessary to transfer an image over from an existing drive?  I plan to swap the 2.5" drive in my Vaio with this drive.

No it does not If you need transfer cables you will need to buy those separately. This comes as a lone drive just like any other sad does.
