Yes, you can!  You can install: Windows 10, Windows 7, Windows XP, Linux - Ubuntu, Fedora and SUSE.

Is this SSD backward compatible, say with a SATA II interface?

Yes it is and works great . I have Win 7 64 bit Win Xp Home and with theses drive installed . Remember with sata 2 you will get better performance but limited to the sata 2 speed . I am thinking of putting a 1tb blue in a Dell 8.1 all in one Insperion . These are bare drive be sure you have a cable and screws .

Does this SSD come with at SATA III cable and/or a 3.5" mounting bracket?

cable will work for current motherboards and any pc case that has a 3.5" area to screw this in.  not sure what mounting bracket you are referring to but all you need are the screws to screw it into your 3.5" bay.

Does this SSD  come with an adapter for use in a PC desktop tower?  Appears all of these are the same size for use in laptops.   thx

It really depends on your workstation/desktop.   Some aftermarket cases have capabilities of attaching 2.5" and 3.5" drives.   If yours does not allow for 3.5", you can always get the adapter.  The one that typically comes with this drive, is not a sufficient adatper IMO.

Does this come with an adaptor to fit older laptops? (7mm to 9mm)

It depends on your model; HP manufactures notebooks with SATA, M.2, and PCI SSD's and HDD's.  Check the specs of your laptop.  If it says 2.5" HDD or SSD, yes, it will fit.

In fact you'll see a pretty significant gain in Boot speed and time loading programs. it will also extend the battery life a little bit as there are no moving parts. Hello Lisa, Unfortunately I cannot confirm as I am using this SSD in a Windows machine. In my previous experience with Apple systems I was able to plug in just about any storage media and read the data off of it. The tricky part is when you want to use it as part of the system and not just for something like storing backed up files for later, you have to format the SSD to use a file system that is native to Mac. If you have ever formatted a hard drive this process is very simple and straightforward. Does this item include the SATA to USB cable to help migrate data?

The high-cost days have past, so, you just spend the ten bucks for the USB3.0 "pigtail", if you need it., and maybe a "sled" for a not-battery-powered computer cased with large bays. They don't box SSDs with those at these low prices. Most likely will simply restore their most recent cloud backup.
