Question 1

Are you finding that this drive is loud when reading?
I just installed this WD Blue 2tb. The performance is as expected but this is the first time I have had to listen to a drive working in years. I have other WD drives that are very quiet. Not too many reviews on this 2TB model yet.

My system sits on my desk right next to me. I am doing a system backup as I type this and I don't notice any noise from the drive, only a little noise from the system fans.

Why bother releasing a 5400 RPM desktop drive in this day and age?

For a home NAS server that is running 24x7 but does not have high utilization (i.e. only 1 or 2 users), slower spinning disks have benefit of lower power consumption and lower heat being generated in my chassis (therefore I can run the internal fans slower and reduce noise).

Question 3

Does this new "Blue" drive have the same issue with hard parking as the green drive it replaces?

Do you need to run wdidle3.exe before using?

It appears they are replacing the Green family with this new lineup of Blue drives.

The section at the bottom of the official WD webpage for the new Blue internal drives in the "Features" tab (cannot post links here) states that the Blue drives use "IntelliSeek", which is most likely just another name for the "IntelliPower" technology used by the Green drives.

Also, a direct quote the official page for the Green drives, again in the "Features" tab:
"The WD Green hard drive functionality will remain the same. However, it will now have a WD Blue label with a slight change to their model numbers (ex. WD60EZRX will now become WD60EZRZ)."

Question 4

Can i use this as an external storage hard drive?  Ie, plug in as if it was a mass storage drive or usb?

It can't be used as an external drive on its own.  External use would require an hard drive enclosure, hard drive docking station, or SATA to USB cable that supplies additional power.

I bought one of these to augment storage on a Dell running 7 Pro (OS is on a SSD) but so far the computer doesn't recognize it and can't even find it. What do I do? Is this just a DOA drive?

I use my blue drive as a external drive on windows 7 pro and 10 machines and they all recognize it. I have a simple question if you have the case  is the drive spooling up ?
