Yes, the player has a remote. It is a very simple remote, and is the only way to access functions of the player as there are no buttons on the player itself.
Yes, the player is installed with Netflix, Vudu, Hulu Plus, Picassa, and Pandora. We use it for Netflix and Pandora. The Netflix allows you to search for movies, and play movies in your instant queue. The Pandora function doesn't allow as many functions as the regular online site, but will play your stations from your existing account just fine.
I believe the apps update automatically. The box is connected via wifi as long as the power is on.
