Poor Effort on Asus' Part to Maintain Customer Loyalty 6/6/2013 1:33:16 PM

Pros: Heatpipe
e-SATA

System:
Athlon X2 6000+ (89W)
Corsair 620W PSU
4GB Corsair Dominator 1066MHz DDR2 (4 x 1GB)
Asus Radeon 6870 / Sapphire Radeon 3870 / PNY GeForce 8600GTS
APC 1500VA UPS
150GB WD Raptor

Cons: No Port Multiplier on e-SATA

Overall Review: Motherboard was purchased Nov 2008. The beginning of the end started back on March 2012.

Motherboard stopped POSTing and gave two quick beeps followed by three quick beeps unless I swapped out the Radeon 6870 with a less power-hungry GPU card.

Asus tech support suggested I clear my CMOS. Nothing.

When I connect a different graphics card (Radeon 3870) I get similar beeping, but I actually get an error message on screen stating that there is no power connected to
my video card. This is obviously a false alarm since the fan on the card is spinning. I could actually get the system to boot using a GeForce 8600GTS but the system would have spontaneous shutdowns for no reason. System seemed to also be more stable reducing the amount of memory modules used.

The motherboard has always ran the CPU at stock speeds. At this point the motherboard is completely useless. It now makes a high-pitch chirp sound (bad capacitor???) and does not POST.

Since my motherboard was out of warranty when it died (3 years and 4 months old back on March 2012), I upgraded to a different system. However I decided recently to see if I can look at paying to have the motherboard repaired by Asus Tech support.

I corresponded with a Matthew S. from the Asus' Support Department and he stated: "...the repair technicians will charge a $120 nonrefundable base fee not
including the cost of additional parts required for repair and the repair itself is not guaranteed."

I'm obviously not going to spend $120 on an old motherboard with no guarantee of having it fixed. Especially since that same amount of money can buy a better motherboard.

Asus, if you want to keep loyal customers you can do better than this.

Great Cpu...:) 11/22/2008 1:12:48 AM

Pros: 89w, 2x1mb cache,price, 2x3.0gigs of blazin' speed!

Cons: the WORST heatsink I have ever seen. smallest case badge I have seen also......1 negative point for all this Con info. I already have two descent heatsinks waiting for this beast. Odd multiplier as mentioned before, forcing overclock for 1:1 ratio with 800mhz ram.

Overall Review: I figured if I upped the fsb to 214mhz then it should give me 400mhz ram. Hopefully my Foxconn 790FX can handle it. If not, Oh well. Cpu is fast enough.

"Amd, try not to box heatsinks like that again. How could you trust anything like that. I bet it couldn't keep a popsicle cool!"

Pros: Excellent value. Fast. 2MB L2 cache. Stays cool at idle with Cool n Quiet enabled (34) and not too hot during load on the stock heatsink+fan (55).

Cons: None so far.

Overall Review: Take advantage of great values on dual core processors since quad cores have been released.
Huge speed increase from previous AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+.

ASUS M3A78 Motherboard

The Poor Man's solution to gaming 11/19/2008 4:56:47 PM

Cons: None

Great processor 11/19/2008 6:32:58 AM

Pros: Fast, cheap, 2mb cache. Great upgrade into the true 3.0ghz processor.

Cons: A little warm, though what you would expect, and like other reviews stock cooler sucks, replace it as well.

Pros: Worked great right out of the box.

Cons: I did notice the memory speed issue listed below, however I have SLI Ready memory, so I just enabled it in the bios of my Asus M3N-HT Deluxe motherboard and the settings were automatically adjusted to the rating of the memory.

Overall Review: The heat sink is a standard heatsink/fan assembly. The assembly that came with my Socket 939 Opteron 170 is much better (heat pipe).

If your pc is in a hot room, or you plan to overclock (I do a little bit) then get a better heatsink/fan assembly.
