does this processor come with the heat sink?

Yes, actually it does.  It is precoated with thermal compound, and actually was bigger then the one I installed for my 3.6GHz of the same type (and both came with the fan as well).

Does this processor need a heat sink? Or is it supplied. If not supplied, what would you recommend?

When I ordered this it came with a heatsink/CPU fan in the box. I bought this in a combo deal with a mother board and other accessories. But the fan was in the CPU box so I believe you should be all set. Hope that helps!

It does come with a cooling unit (heatsink). I actually even over clocked mine a very small amount and i haven't had any over heating problems. So if you want that extra little speed go ahead but definitely don't try and over due it without looking more into it.

Can this run Battlefield 4?

I do not use the GPU from the processor....I use an NVIDIA card to play my games with.   I would check the what the game requirements call for.   As a CPU, it should run the game very well.

I have had an FX-4130 installed on an ASRock 990FX Extreme3 MB, running 24x7 for nearly 3 months; installed memory is 2x4GB G.Skill DDR3, PC3-12800 (800 MHz), Part Number: F3-12800CL9-4GBRL.

This PC is a home file/multi-media server, and also runs a streaming mp3 Shoutcast service (24x7). So far the system hasn't had as much as a hiccup and is very responsive.

It's located in an unheated garage; the ambient temp is currently 68F and the FX-4130 is running at 7C (with stock cpu cooler/fan).

I am happy with this processor and have no problem with recommending it for a general use machine.

Question 6

How much better is this CPU then the AMD Athlon II x3 445 Triple Core 3.1GHz? I would be using it for gaming. Also, would this CPU be compatible with the GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 AMD 9 Series Motherboard - ATX, Socket AM3+, AMD 990FX Chipset, 2000MHz DDR3 (O.C.) motherboard?

Between CPU's, I don't know.   I do play games with this one and haven't had any lag or any issues.  The fan is super quiet too and I had to actually check if it was on.

For the motherboard, it should work as the board says AM3+ and this is a AM3+ processor.  I have a Gigabyte GA-970A-D3P board.  You can always check through Gigabyte on what is supported for their boards.

The heat sink/fan supplied with the processor has the thermal paste pre-applied. The processor does not have the thermal paste pre-applied. If you are going to use an aftermarket Heat sink/fan cooling system make sure that it comes with this thermal paste or you will need to purchase some. Do not install without this paste or it will over heat and be toast.

Is this compatible with AM2 sockets?

It really depends on the motherboard your wanting to use this on. A lot of the higher end am2 motherboards will support AM3 but AMD FX are AM3+ processors, so you talking about 2 generation leaps there.If its something like an HP or Dell pc.. I would forget about it, it won't work. But if its a custom board..look on your board for the model type.. It should be in big white letters right around the PCI slots just below your processor socket.. Or by your RAM slots.Take it on line and check the manufacturer's sight..You gotta do some research. And if so, it's very likely that your board will need a BiOS update to support it.

Is this processor optimized for gaming? i.e can it run Battlefield 4 or Arma 3?

I cannot say with certainty, there are other factors involved. Hard-Disk Speed / RAM / Graphics Card / etc. I have been playing StarCraft II with no problems. Note, I do play on lower graphical settings. I believe this is mainly due to my graphics card and not the processor. I can stream Netflix / Spotify / SlingBox / Twitch while playing and not have any hiccups.

I am learing 3d imaging w/ blender, currently run GImp with all the bells and whistles, ink scape and will be adding a ray tracer, animator and font developer. What would you reccomend for a mother board and chipset?

I think the CPU you chose is great. I would definetly recommend 8GB of RAM from what you stated your requirements are. As for the motherboard, BIOStar, MSI, and Gigabyte all make great boards. MAKE SURE you get a 24pin main connector on the power supply, not a 20pin that are included in some of the NewEgg packages. Thermaltake and Corsair both make good PSU's that are above 500w.
