I purchased the AMD Ryzen 5 3400G w/ Radeon Vega 11 Graphics – S/N 9HM6188R90219 as part of a package and it came with the ASRock B4500M Pro4 – P/N 90-MXB8F0A-0UAYZ . I did not request any additional equipment and it booted first time with no problems.

The question, in the way that it is phrased, does not have a meaning with regards to an APU or CPU. The Ryzen 5 3400G is an APU which contains a CPU + Integrated Graphics. The CPU portion of this APU has a base speed of 3.7 GigaHertz, with a boost speed of 4.2 GigaHertz. "GigaHertz" represents a multiplier of 1000000000, which means that 3.7 GigaHertz represents 3700000000 cycles per second. More cycles per second is generally better, but also represents more electricity expended, as well as more heat produced. When you say "gigs," I can only assume you are speaking of "GigaHertz," aka GHz. This does not equate to the overall usefulness of the CPU in question, as another factor is the number of operations that can be performed in 1 cycle. Intel and AMD, the primary manufacturers of CPU's and APU's, use a common set of 8086 core instructions, but also implement different extended instruction sets based on the model of the CPU/APU. All AMD 3000 model CPU/APU's such as the 3400G use most of the extended instruction sets, as do most of the Intel 9K and 10K CPU/APU models. On the whole, Intel CPU/APU units run at a faster speed than AMD units, but AMD units generally do more operations per cycle. I prefer AMD, and I do own a 3400G APU which I use in a low power system I use for basic games and productivity workloads. I hope this answered your question.

will this work with a b450 tomahawk the board says it supports 3rd gen ryzen?

Yes it will work with the b450 tomahawk. You may have to update the bios but the mobo will work with the 3400g. If the tomahawk has bios flash as a feature you can just use a usb to update the bios. If it does not have bios flash on that particular motherboard you would need a 1st or 2nd gen ryzen cpu to boot up and download the new mobo drivers prior to installing the 3400g. It would be worth it if the tomahawk has bios flash as a feature or if you have an older ryzen cpu to boot with and download the latest drivers.

Is there any benifit on buying this procceser if you are also buying a high end grapgics card? Does the integrated graphics help it any somehow?

No. Go with the suggestions for purchasing a newer, more modern CPU without integrated graphics. The only reason for purchasing any CPU with integrated graphics is if your graphic needs are minimal. This CPU is adequate for simple graphics, but if you are into any kind of video processing, go for more processing power.

Question 5

I have the ASRock X370 Pro4 motherboard.  Looking on ASRock's site, it says to upgrade the Bios to 5.40 then to upgrade to 5.80.  I have a NVidia graphics card in at the moment.  If I simply replace the processor should the system work so I can then install the new Bios or should I install the Bios with the old processor (Ryzen 5 1600), first?  Thanks

Dude you are in a real pickle I have not found the pins I need to jump in order to update the BIOS.  My system is only win10 compatible and I have to use the built in video display graphics from the processor. I have tried AMD and Nvidia graphics boards and they all make my win 10 very unstable.  I gave up and I am only using The RYZEN onboard graphics and the system is stable. The onboard graphics are good enough, but I really would like the ability to use any add on video card for testing purposes.

Can I use this CPU with Windows 7?

Not Really. Windows 7 has not had an official release to support Ryzen cpus. Microsoft says they will only support Ryzen on Windows 10. There are workarounds but they are not officially supported.

how is the performance of this compared to the 2400g for gaming?

This is better than the 2400G by a good margin while at a very similar price. I just put it together and without a dedicated GPU, it's running Fortnite on Medium settings at well over 60 FPS. Just make sure you get a good SSD (I'd suggest an M.2 2280 NVMe, blazing fast those are) and 3200 or 3000 MHZ RAM (16 GB preferably) to support it properly. It'll handle modern games at medium graphic settings, maybe low if it's really intense. I'm referring to 1080p or 720p displays though. If you try to go higher, it might be better to add a GPU.

No, it most likely won't, because it is a Zen+ architecture CPU. It might be possible if you get very lucky with the silicon lottery, but for most Zen+ CPUs, the memory controller will typically max out around 3466. And 3200 is the safest choice. For me personally, I was able to run my chip with 3400MHz RAM but 3466 was not stable.

would this be compatible with 3600mhz ram?

I don't think so. Certainly won't make use of the extra 20% speed. I use mine with 2933mhz -- which was recommended back when I bought it in 2019 -- very stable. I've heard about a couple of uses of 3200mhz with no problem. Why spend extra?

No. It does not come with thermal paste. The supplied cooler will have a small amount, but i wouldn't use that. Get yourself some quality silver paste and use that. You can remove the factory thermal paste from the supplied heatsink/cooler with qtips and alcohol.
