Yes you can add additional cameras at a later time. The arlo system allows for up to 5 cameras. Very easy process to add the additional cameras.

Do you have to use cloud storage?

There is no way to connect to the cameras/system directly directly.  You may disable the cloud storage feature for yourself, but the system runs via their service anyway. It is like you mobile phone - uncle Sam records always records the conversation as per Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act .

So the system use the cloud service regardless, it is your choice if you want to have your own copy.

Why does the description say 720p and this model should be 1080p?

Arlo Pro cameras are 720p. Arlo Pro 2 cameras are 1080p. I own the 720p version and am happy with the video quality.

Will base station and USB for the ARLO Pro capture motion and sound triggered events-  without need for Internet, WIFI, a hot spot or cloud access?
I'm looking to use in a remote location.  No internet, cell phone coverage - even the police radios typically do not have coverage until the officer drives to a higher location.  Will base station and USB for the ARLO Pro capture motion and sound triggered events-  without need for Internet, WIFI, a hot spot or cloud access.  
Note:   ARLO GO is not an option.    If the  recording resides with the camera,  those trespassing will disable the camera and steal it along with the recording and proof.  Thanks,

NO! All Arlo video recordings are stored to the cloud, but you can connect a USB device to the Arlo Pro base station and use the USB device as a second location to store Arlo Wire-Free and Arlo Pro Wire-Free recordings locally. Local storage to a USB device cannot be used on its own as a substitute for cloud recording.

Why are 4 camera kits unavailable but 2-3-5 camera kits ARE available?

not sure why the company does it, I will tell you that you can have up to 5 camera's on the free plan and then you have to pay. The system works with up to 10 camera's. I started out with 2 to see how it worked and added 3 more.

How long will the battery last before needing to be recharged?

It seems to vary but customers on the Netgear Arlo forums say 20-30 days. There are reported issues with battery charging in colder climates resulting in disabled cameras.
