CAmeras work great! Very pleased 4/25/2020 2:17:08 PM

Pros: The cameras were extremely east to install, and once I moved one from being too close to another one, have worked perfectly. Have not yet set up the alarm, but have no reason to suspect it won't work. Need to know how to delete old clips that are saved, but I'm sure I can google it and find out.

Overall Review: Overall, I would certainly recommend these camera and this system to others. It was economical, easily installed, and works perfectly!

Great as a Toy; Questionable for Security 3/17/2020 9:58:29 AM

Pros: Nice motion sensitivity
Nice sound sensitivity
Easy to mount
Easy to setup -- if you are intuitive
Customer support wait time was excellent
Nice resolution even for the 720p in the Pro version
Night vision is acceptable

Cons: Quick start guide is insufficient
Positioning feature was too unresponsive to be useful
Two out of three bars for a camera only 50 feet away
Duplex talking has a lag time
Alert to the app is too slow to view the activity
Upload for later viewing is variable in lag time

Overall Review: I was able to purchase a three camera Pro set while it was on sale. For the price paid, it's an interesting toy; however, I don't think you could use these for real time security. It's kind of interesting to see the package delivery to your door, but if you're wanting a real security system camera, you need to spend more money. The quick start guide is virtually worthless. I had downloaded the owner's manual and worked from it. At that, you need to be somewhat intuitively literate as to what was happening regarding firmware updating for both the base station as well as each camera as well as each camera registering itself with the base station. In other words, the sequence of steps in the owner's manual isn't perfect as to how things actually happen. There is a feature that once you download the app, you can use the "positioning" feature to aim the camera while mounting -- that feature has such a lag time that it's virtually worthless. In fact, at most times there was absolutely no real time viewing as to where the camera was pointing. The camera has such a wide field of view that once I did the first camera, the others were easier. You can use the app to turn off any camera in case you happen to be using the area and don't want the camera responding such as when you're going to be using the deck or washing the car in a particular camera's field of view. In that regard, I had shared camera viewing/control with my wife's phone app and she inadvertently removed a camera rather than just turning it off. We couldn't intuitively get it back and had to call technical support; they took my call in a very short period of time -- perhaps no more than several minutes of wait. All in all, yes, I would buy these again. Just keep in mind that it's an interesting camera system but if you need real security these might not satisfy you.

Hardware is OK, service and support - HORRIBLE 3/15/2019 6:47:35 AM

Pros: Hardware looks nice, somewhat easy to set up, and works as expected. Not stellar, but giving up some features / video quality for convenience of wireless. I was initially impressed with the system. Then I used it...

Cons: Arlo Smart is a sham. It may be able to distinguish between human, animal, vehicle, but you'll have to wait until your house has been broken into and the perps are in another town before you get an alert. I honestly have no idea how they can sell this as a "feature". I consistently get alerts 10+ minutes after an event... *IF* I get an alert at all. No, it's not my network. No, it's not my internet connection. I get 180+ Mbps over wireless. I've been on the phone with support 6 times over the past two months. The fifth call lasted 90 minutes... NINETY MINUTES! In addition to all this, during my troubleshooting calls with Arlo I've been asked to reset everything, cancel my subscription and resubscribe multiple times. This has resulted in me being double, triple, and now quadruple billed for service with only one of those charges being refunded. I made yet another call to support yesterday to try to remedy this and was on hold for another 30 minutes before I hung up and decided that Arlo just isn't the right company for me and I will make sure that I post my experience so others will think twice before giving them their money.

Overall Review: On Arlo's community forums I have found others in the same boat with delayed alerts and the same frustrations with support. It seems that the system is flawed and Arlo won't admit it. I hope they are at least trying to fix it because I can't imagine anyone feeling good about paying for a feature that is useless.

I am unfortunately outside of the return window with NewEgg, but would love to box the entire system up and send it back to Arlo with a copy of the receipt asking for a full refund of every penny I've given to them.

Bottom Line: Arlo Smart is not a fully functional feature that adds to the experience. It has flaws that Arlo will not admit to, but they are very willing to take your money for it... over and over again. If you need these kinds of smart detection features in a camera system, I would explore other options.

Subpar Quality Control 4/9/2018 10:23:27 PM

Pros: When they work they're great
Good video quality
Easy app to use

Cons: 2 did not work out of the box. I needed to add a small piece of paper so the battery would be snug.
This did not last long once mounted because the door would be pulled slightly when mounted.

Overall Review: I'd buy again but only if the quality improved.

Works as expected but a low resolution makes the sytem limited. 6/11/2017 3:50:23 PM

Pros: Good for Front and Back doors or Inside due to lower resolution. Also good for an apartment due to no wires. I like the Geofencing option to self arm/disarm. Battery life is really good. No problems with distance inside. Easy to setup. Free cloud storage for up to 5 camera's, can't beat that. 2 way speaker, can turn off audio recording but still audio triggers a recording which is nice. Outdoor audio recording in some states may not be legal due to Wiretapping laws.

Cons: Resolution is too low for any real distance. Geofencing takes a little while to work, sometimes the system stays armed when I get home even though I have it set to Large area. Setup a custom profile to turn off the inside cameras when I am home but keep the outside cameras on motion detection.

Overall Review: When I found out how limited the picture looked, I also purchased a POE system from Lorax "2K IP Security camera system with 8 Channel NVR and 4 HD outdoor 3MP cameras LN10802-84W" for outside, shed, backyard, driveway due to higher resolution. With POE I will only need to run 1 wire for each camera. Plus it has push alerts with motion detection. The combination of these 2 systems work well for me.

Works well 5/20/2017 4:13:02 AM

Pros: Easy install and setup. Web Browser and Android phone interface excellent. I installed 4 cameras and then got a 5th. Adding devices is easy. I use all cameras out doors monitoring doors, windows, drive ways and sidewalks. I have motion flood lighting. Cameras give best night picture mounted above a lighting source looking down at illuminated areas. Switching from FLIR to normal at night when the floods come on is very fast.

Cons: The hardest thing is hanging the cameras. You have to be able to climb up and down a ladder and use a power drill to screw in screws. I am > 65 and was able to do it. I used a 6 ft ladder with my trusty Makita power driver.

The magetic dome mounts work well. The magnetic mount may hold the camera too close to wall making it difficult to cover a window or garage door on the same wall the camera is mounted on. Then you'll want a VMA1000 or VMA1100 mount. For ease of battery pack changing the magnetic wall mount is preferred. For added camera security, I used the camera mount VMA1000 where you could possibly get a video of someone stealing it, at least they have to unscrew it to take it. I mounted all cameras at 7.5 feet from ground. Cameras are enough off the ground they can't easily be reached while allowing ez access with a 6ft step ladder to change battery packs.

I would prefer a replaceable CR123 instead of rechargable proprierity battery pack. Rechargable batteries do not last forever and require replacing someday anyways. I do not see how that is an improvement. The improved motion sensor and picture quality of the ARLO PRO over the first ARLO cameras made me go with rechargable. What would be nice is if the battery pack opened exposing 2 CR123 batteries, then the user could choose to recharge or not.

Requires a bunch of expensive user infrasructure like a router, cable modem, ISP. Be sure you meet or exceed usage requirements. I have Comcast. I am not sure how this would do on a slower DSL ISP.

Overall Review: While not a POE monitoring system with NVR this works well. I think costs are comparable to a POE system unless you're willing to pull your own cable then the POE system will be significantly less expensive. POE systems require drilling holes through a wall for each camera then gathering all those camera cables (1 for each camera) to plug into your NVE. I hate drilling holes in my homes walls and pulling cable. I hate crawling around in the attic. Hiring a contractor to pull cable for you makes the POE system more expensive than the wireless Arlo.

This works exactly like a POE system except videos are sent to a cloud server over your internet instead of a NVR. The base station has USB ports and will capture video to that USB connected drive at the same time it is sent to the cloud, so in effect the base station is the NVR. I use a 240GB USB Flash drive and hey, we are done!

I would recommend to anyone wanting a home camera security system.

Good upgrade from old Arlo, apparent hardware problem making Duplex Audio useless 10/25/2016 4:34:29 PM

Pros: Faster record start from motion detection; No more expensive batteries; Alarm somewhat useful, local USB storage somewhat useful.

Cons: Duplex Audio useless, speaker on camera not audible.
Still no ability to pipe or fork camera output to NAS or Home Server
Often very slow on manual record/view

Overall Review: I had purchased last month two sets of Arlo 2 camera systems. When I hear the new "Pro System" was coming out I held off opening one. It was release to a B/M store (I always favor Newegg with its excellent business practices and pricing, but in this case the egg had not had it yet) and I purchased a four camera "Pro" System and returned one of my older system and set aside the used one to give to my brother.
There are some notable improvements in the Pro, both in the cameras and in the base station and I will get to those.

But first I have to note that after hours of testing, making sure firmware was up to date, resets, etc, that the audio output from the cameras, a main selling point to upgrading for me, is useless. I have used not only my new, perfectly function Android phone to test, but also my wife's iPhone 6S, her iPad, and my computer. None of these these devices have had any problem or shortcomings with their microphones including using for google calls, GoToMeeting and skype. In all cases the audio output by the camera's speaker is very very low with the Arlo Pro camera. In a word, inaudible. You can hear the person on camera but they cannot hear you.

That major problem aside, the main benefit to the Arlo Pro above this old cameras and base station are:
1) Camera based improvements:
a) major headache of battery cost is now gone due to rechargeable batteries
b) better motion detection hardware and performance. this is still a problem, taking down some triggering from three to four seconds, down to two seconds with the new cameras means you are going to see the back of the mailman as he goes, instead of just his leg, at the start of the video, but it is some progress.
2) Base unit added features
a) Alarm siren. some utility for some users, not much for others. I'd rather netgear sold a separate wifi device(s) on could place away from the unit and/or outside, a s the current siren just directs anyone who has broken in to your system to the base which they can pull its power immediately.
b) USB storage. This has some utility if your internet connection goes. You can output to a stick or an up to 2TB FAT32 drive attached directly to the base via USB. But even if you have that 2TB hooked in you can NOT direct a given camera or the system to record continuously or for a set period of time without a trigger. We have people stealing packages from stoops where I am and both UPS and fedex come between 3-4 pm and there is no way for me to set a camera to record from 2:30 pm to 6 when I come home even though 2TB at the 720p of the cameras is plenty to do that many many times over. it also will not output to my NAs or home server.
At $190 a camera, zero ability to pipe, fork or do anything to use even one as actual direct able/accessible IP is a serious negative for me. IP has some security issues if you don't know what you are doing so perhaps this is why forking it is for all practical purposes blocked. But buyers who know what they are doing with their routers and the many free to inexpensive apps will get more utility looking elsewhere. And even Arlo out of the box has its own security issues as GRC and others have noted.

All in all it is not a bad system. These are all works in progress, with a variety of uses to a variety of consumers. In my case my town was subsidizing these systems if bought new and used mainly for outdoor use (I have three outside and one inside) up to five C notes in a program that was expiring, so I jumped on this quickly, especially given the rechargeable version meant no ongoing costs.

To protect your recordings, they are stored in the cloud. The Arlo Basic plan gives you access to your motion- and audio-triggered recordings from the past 7 days for free! You can read more about our service plans here: http://arlo.com/en-us/products/subscription-plans.aspx. You can also connect a USB device to the Arlo Pro base station and use the USB device as a second location to store your recordings locally (local storage cannot be used on its own as a substitute for cloud recording). Please email us at netgearteam@netgear.com. Things that may be helpful would include information about your camera's placement, placement (distance) and type of devices you used to test the audio, and any observations you made.
