Question 1

The Drum unit says 12K pages and the toner say 1.2k for e and 2.6k for XL. Is the drum a replacement for the toner or is it like a printhead on an inkjet?

In an HP toner cartridge, the imaging drum is inside the cartridge, so you replace the toner cartridge before the drum is actually used up.   That's why there's a toner cartridge refill industry.  And yes, it's a pretty close analog to HP ink cartridges, which have the print head built-in.

With Brother toner cartridges, the imaging drum is separate from the toner repository.  So every time you change toner, you pull the whole toner-and-imaging drum assembly out of the printer, detach the empty toner from the drum, attach the new toner to the drum, and reinsert the assembly into the printer.  The printer will tell you when it's time to replace the imaging drum.

Just as it's a good idea to keep a spare toner cartridge on hand, it's a good idea to also keep a spare imaging drum on hond.

Is this an original brother drum unit? or is it a comparable unit?

It is an original.  It fits right in the drum unit.  I usually use about 3 of these before needing the drum which is sold separate.

this is not a cartridge but it's a drum....and it's compatible with HL2270DW that we have here too....but this is the Drum....the thing that holds the cartridge that got a lifetime use....

Is it true Brother laser printers require periodic change of DRUM'S in addition to the usual change of TONER CARTRIDGE'S?  Or are the DRUMs changed only if they are broken?  WHY WOULD ANY COMPANY BE SO STUPID AS TO REQUIRE THE CHANGE OF TWO UNITS, INSTEAD OF JUST ONE??

They require a periodic change of DRUM'S and in very rare cases can break or be damaged before they are up for replacement.  The "Drum" roller actually wears down over time and needs to be replaced to keep the image quality of the prints.  The manufacturer stated yield on this Drum is about 12,000 pages and 2,600 on the toner cartridges if you are using the high yield cartridges.  They split the toner and drum unit into separate parts to help cut costs and make the printer smaller.  Some old printers have the drum and toner all in one cartridge and they are usually much bigger than they have to be to hold all the extra toner and they usually balance it out by using a drum roller that has a lower yield, but they usually have a much higher price than just buying the toner separately.  Generally you will still end up spending about the same.

Does the printer print any pages or does the drum state it can't.  Look for resetting the drum count.  I do this on all the Brother printers I have and won't replace the drum until the print quality is bad.
