The drive will support any operating system as long as your motherboard, cpu, memory and video card will support 8.1 you will be fine.  So far this drive has been rock solid for me.

My current laptop has a Western Digital Scorpio Black 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Notebook Hard Drive.

Are the new 6.0Gb/s hard drives compatible with the older laptops that use 3.0Gb/s hard drives?

6gb/s drives work fine on 3gb/s systems. Max data transfer will be at 3gb/s. This 7200rpm drive can send data much faster than your old 5400rpm drive, so you will get better performance from it. WD black drives are of high quality with a good warranty. An SSD drive would be faster, but at that size they are very expensive.

Yes, as long as you have a spare SATA port and a SATA power connector to connect the drive, it will work better than the hard drive you currently have from my experience , if your going to put this as your main hard drive (with operating system) you will want to consider getting a hard drive transfer cable or a copy of the operating system you want to have on the computer.

Question 4

Can I use this SATA 6.0 drive to replace a 1TB Toshiba MK1059GSM (which I believe is SATA 1.5)?  Not concerned about reduced size.  Looking for better performance with the 7200 RPM with 16MB cache.  Thank you.

Absolutely you will see increased performance overall. Granted the system the Toshiba came out of may be limited to a SATA I/II controller, so you may only see 1.5/3.0GB/s throughput instead of the full 6.0GB/s but the 7200RPM and 16MB cache should yield noticeable results. Once you've reinstalled your OS, if it is a Windows System, I would check the manufacturers website of the computer and check for updated SATA Controller drivers as well as Chipset, what comes with Windows is generic. This may improve some performance as well. And I would check for a BIOS update on top, but most manufacturers require Windows installed before you can update, so do all of that last, i.e once you have the computer up and running and Windows updates are complete, since more than likely you'll need DotNet 4x installed to update the BIOS. If it's OSX or Linux, then it's not needed.

I don't see why not.  I bought it for a Dell D-620, but have not yet installed it.  The way I checked it out was to pull the drive currently in the D-620 and match it to the connector image for this drive.  The only other thing you need to check is the thickness of the drive.  I also verified that the thickness of this drive matched the one already in the computer.  Hope this helps.

Need a harddrive for a Dell Inspiron 1420. How do I know if a harddrive is compatable with this computer?

The Inspiron 1420 accepts SATA hard drives, and this is indeed a SATA drive. Newer SATA standards are backwards-compatible with older ports, so this is compatible even if it's listed as "SATA 3" and the laptop takes SATA 2, for instance.

Is this compatibile with Dell Inspiron 1520?

From what I looked up on the Inspiron 1520, this drive will be compatible.  However, it will not take advantage of SATA3 speeds, as the Inspiron is only capable of SATA1 speeds.  So, it wont reach its performance potential, but will still work.  Definitely faster than the 5400rpm drive that came with it stock.  However, make sure your laptop is cooling properly, as these 7200rpm drives get hotter than their 5400rpm counterparts.

I'm not a tech. I needed this for my son's 15" Toshiba. I read the details in the description and it sounded like the standard replacement for a regular sized laptap. It was-screwed out the old one and screwed in the new one, put in the new OS and he has a new old computer. Hope this helps.

Should be fine for that Sony... for most all laptops for that matter. There's a bracket, generally, on the old drive that you'll need to put on the new drive but that's pretty easy... plug it in and reload the OS.
