Will this fit a DELL XPS 8700 Desktop System?

With any 2.5" drive in that desktop, you'll want to also purchase a 2.5" to 3.5" hard drive bracket, if you are planning on using it as one of two storage drives(keeping your current drive as well), you will likely need to buy the extra SATA III data cable, (I believe for the 8700 you may wish to go with an 18" cable for routing purposes.) If you are looking at replacing your current drive, you will not need the extra SATA cable. In any case, the performance boost from using this SSD as your primary drive will be noticeable, and worth the trouble, to say the least.

Does this 2.5" unit come with a 3.5" adapter?

No, it does not come with the 3.5 adapter. It comes with a shim to make it fit snugly in place of a spinning 2.5 drive (at least it did when I ordered mine).

To clone the drive before installing it do I need anything like a cable? I BELIEVE it comes with software for the job but how do I connect it?

I used the  SATA cable from the DVD drive and my PC had a second power connector available.

It should. It would fit in my 13 inch macbook pro from 2012 and I doubt the 15" has any less space.

Works anywhere you need an SSD. Just make sure it's a SATA connector and not IDE. Mounting it is easy because it's small and lightweight. Heck, you could probably hang it by some twisty ties or glue it in a pinch

You don't need that software all operating systems rely on only sata drivers for these which are normally a support from your mother boards bios. It been a long time since using XP but if I remember you had to add sata support for XP.

Many computer cases come with mounting places and there is no need for a kit. It does not come with a mounting kit, however, so you may need to purchase a mounting bracket if your case does not have one already.

any requirements on the mother board to operate a 1TB ssd efficiently ?

I think it is only important that your motherboard has an open SATA port for you to connect to, as well as a SATA power connector.  If you still have the manual that came with your motherboard, that will be helpful.  Otherwise, you can "google" it.

Does this actually have cache? I've checked PCPartPicker and it says it has 1gb of cache, some reviews say 1gb while others say 512mb of cache, and the description says it has 0mb of cache. Which one is actually the amount? Can anyone who bought the product and checked the amount help? Thanks.

Well, I don’t know. I’ve looked at the packaging and I haven’t been able to find anything about it. However, I can tell you from experience that this drive is amazingly fast. You will not be disappointed by the incredible speed boost you will get in real world usage. We have 2 perfectly good gaming laptops that were fairly new, and specked out nicely. Both were too slow for their specs. I checked my wife’s laptop during a sluggish windows update, and the 5200 rpm Samsung HDD was pinned at 100%. Everything else was fine. When I swapped that HDD for this Crucial SSD, her laptop was literally about 600 to 700 percent faster, in every usage category. It’s very durable and reliable too. You’ll be happy.
