Can the heatsink be removed?

I removed it, but I went real slow and careful. I felt a bit uneasy flexing my brand new SSD to separate it from the heatsink. It isn't glued, you just have to keep working at it and it will come off but it's not a fun process.

Why is the heatsink option $100 more?
