what is the diff between managed and unmanaged. I have a dsl modem into a wireless/4 port wired router. what do i need?

An unmanaged switch is a plug and play device that moves packets between ip address. A managed switch provides substantially more function at the expense of higher cost and increased complexity. For example, a managed switch will support  the SNMP for management. One can communicate with the switch CLI over secure sockets or other protocols. One can implement features like VLAN or mirroring to scan incoming packets. There are quite a few articles on the web that discuss this topic in greater detail. Managed switches are typically used in commercial environments due to their cost and management complexity. There is nothing that would prevent one from using a managed switch at home, but it does require more knowledge and effort to take advantage of it's features. For most home environments an unmanaged switch is adequate.

I have an older "C1" revision of this particular switch, its got a fan that is getting rather loud and obnoxious now, looking to replace it.   Is it true this latest version of the switch no longer has the fan?   Thanks!

No fan. I would recommend putting it in a location with good ventilation.  I've been using the switches for almost 2 years and there's been no heat issues.  Good cheap switch.  Would be nice if the LED lights were below the respective port rather than to the side.

this switch support ipv6 or not??

Switches doesn't know about IP, they only know about MAC Address as they operates at Layer 2. So the answer is yes, it does support ipv6 as long as your edge router supports IPv6 and your DHCP server is set to leave IPv6 addresses.

What does it mean "on ship: 500KB Buffer Memory per device"? Can you open it and upgrade it?

The 500KB Buffer Memory is used for the MAC Address table. I am not sure this can be upgraded. I don't think it is worth to try to upgrade it as it could be integrated on the system board.

if you need larger CAM table, you might need an enterprise class switches and managed ones.

this unit is not manage, which means you can't create VLANs and it is only a layer 2 device. No routing processing on this unit.
