Good multiple connection access point

BUFFALO WLI-TX4-G54HP Wireless-G MIMO Performance Ethernet Converter IEEE 802.3/3u, IEEE 802.11b/g Ethernet Port Up to 125Mbps Wireless Data Rates
BUFFALO WLI-TX4-G54HP Wireless-G MIMO Performance Ethernet Converter IEEE 802.3/3u, IEEE 802.11b/g Ethernet Port Up to 125Mbps Wireless Data Rates

Pros: Installed this for a friend needing to reach an wireless router on the other side of the house. Great way to provide wireless access to a system without buying a wireless NIC or PCMCIA card and then possibly buying a directional antenna trying to make it work. Use a network cable to move it to where it works for you! Very flexible wireless access. Connect up to four systems (4 port sw). WPA-PSK: TKIP or AES and WEP if you still use it. Can lock it to B, G or Auto mode. So far good throughput, quick to connect. NO additional drivers to find or install. No software to configure.

Cons: Manual is not very good. Typical of today's technical manuals or installation instructions. Unless I overlooked something, if you set a fixed IP for this device (which I would prefer), you then have to set fixed IP's for the systems connected to it. However, if you leave it DHCP, once you configure the wireless network (SSID, WPA) it will get it's address and attached systems addresses from your DHCP server/router.

Overall Review: I am thinking about buying one of these for my tool kit. Being able to add a system (up to four) to a network without having hunt for an open sw port(s), run cable (s) across the floor or install a wireless NIC is handy. Take advantage of the network port any system. NO additional drivers to install or software to configure. Oh yeah I mentioned that already...

Value... not so much

ZyXEL ZyWALL ZWUSG20 Internet Security Firewall with 4 Gigabit LAN / DMZ Ports, 2 IPSec VPN, SSL VPN , and 3G WAN Support
ZyXEL ZyWALL ZWUSG20 Internet Security Firewall with 4 Gigabit LAN / DMZ Ports, 2 IPSec VPN, SSL VPN , and 3G WAN Support

Pros: Good specs. Looks good.

Cons: 1. Noisy (irritating pitch) fan if used in small office/area. 2. Content Filtering (URL, etc) capable. NOT included. 3. Would rather configure SonicWall, Netgear or Cisco VPN router than this one. Too much drilling down into menus/options. Top level should have 10 to 20 starting points not 4. Takes way too long to set up. Slow menu changes. 4. Manufacturers web site not of much value.

Overall Review: Eliminate the stupid "Smart Fan" and put a heat sink in it like most manufacturers do for this class firewall/router. With all the vents in the plastic case why the fan?

ZOTAC ZBOX CI323 - for pfsense use... or???

ZOTAC ZBOX C Series CI323 Nano Passive Cooling Mini PC with Intel Celeron N3150 Quad-Core CPU Intel HD Graphics Barebones System
ZOTAC ZBOX C Series CI323 Nano Passive Cooling Mini PC with Intel Celeron N3150 Quad-Core CPU Intel HD Graphics Barebones System

Pros: Dual NICs (Realtek not Intel), Dual DIMM slots; Quad Core; NO fans, multiple vido options.

Cons: BIOS is missing some expect options like turn off wireless. "CIR" is a Consumer InfraRed sensor. Had to look that up. Wish SDHC was bootable.

Overall Review: Unfortunately mine has been setting around for about two months before I could get to using it. Has intermittent issues hanging and power cycling particularly if cables are touched like plugging network or USB in and out. NIC 0 (re0) occasionally drops in and out. Tested memory, OS's (pfSense, Linux Mint & Scientific) and hard drives. Stays with this system. Ordered another Zotac Zbox last Friday before testing this one over the weekend. Since mine was beyond Newegg's 30 day return/exchange. We will see how Zotac handles this replacement. Hopefully a good one in a timely manner.

Good smaller case w power supply.

In Win BP655 mini ITX case with IP-S300FF1-0 H Haswell Ready power supply, 8cm Fan, Black, TAC 2.0, Front USB 3.0X2, HD audio
In Win BP655 mini ITX case with IP-S300FF1-0 H Haswell Ready power supply, 8cm Fan, Black, TAC 2.0, Front USB 3.0X2, HD audio

Pros: Good size. Easy assembly for small desktop or video system. Plan to use for pfSense.

Cons: Noisy case fan. Bright blue fan would be fine in datacenter. Too bright in home or home office.

Overall Review: Replaced the original case fan with a ARCTIC F8 PWM Fluid Dynamic Bearing Case Fan, 80mm PWM Speed Control, Item# 9SIA1K63V02908

Good, quiet 8mm case fan.

Great small workgroup printer

brother HL Series HL-2170W Workgroup Up to 23 ppm Monochrome Wireless Laser Printer
brother HL Series HL-2170W Workgroup Up to 23 ppm Monochrome Wireless Laser Printer

Pros: Using this printer in multiple locations and multiple OS's. Easy to configure on Apple and Linux too! Does NOT pester me to buy supplies, install nor upgrade software. Load drivers if needed and go! Brother supports almost all OS's. Another reason to buy and support Brother.

Cons: Either wired or wireless.... not both... at least at the last firmware level I installed. That cost me some time to fix after hosing up the network config trying to do both.

Overall Review: Brother Laser fan... good price points... especially on sale! :-) This printer comes with a 1,000 page "starter" toner cart. Manual two sided printing... ;-)
