Good board overall

ASUS P5E-VM HDMI <GREEN> LGA 775 Intel G35 HDMI Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
ASUS P5E-VM HDMI <GREEN> LGA 775 Intel G35 HDMI Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: -Lots of SATA connectors for a board with built-in video. (A feature I wanted) -Excellent overclocking capabilities. -Atheros GigE chip is one of the better ones. -No video card needed. -Board seems to be well built, and the board will be long obsolete before the capacitors will ever get dodgy.

Cons: -HDMI/digital video output is difficult to deal with. I'm running Linux on my machine, (it's a database / number crunching machine, which is why I wanted built-in video and lots of SATA ports for lower cost and lots of hard drives.) To make a long story short, I'm using the analog video output. -Automatic bad-overclock recovery BIOS is useful, except that sometimes it doesn't reboot properly, which means that you can't reboot it remotely because it might not come back up and you won't be there to push the power button. This is rarely an issue for me though, because it's rock solid once it is on. -Supposedly, the reboot issue has been fixed in a BIOS upgrade, but I could not get the flash drive BIOS upgrade method to work, (forums say this is common,) and I don't have a floppy drive, so the original BIOS remains.

Overall Review: Most motherboards are not perfect. This one offers excellent value unless you want a gaming machine, in which case I would suggest you get something that has more PCIe slots and a different chipset. The reboot issue doesn't cause me much trouble at all, but it would be nice to be able to upgrade the BIOS. The pros far outweigh the cons for this board, in my opinion. I'm running a Q6600 substantially overclocked with 2 sticks of GSkill 5-5-5-15 PC2-6400 RAM, and 2 sticks of 4-4-4-12 PC2-6400 Patriot RAM, running at 5-5-5-15 and some clock speed that I can't remember that is greater than 800. Totally stable. Memtest86 confirms it. Been running like this for months with no problems.

Great RAM

Crucial Ballistix 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model BL2KIT25664AA80A

Pros: Runs DDR2-1066 at 5-5-5-15 stable at 2.0V. Mine ran DDR2-910 stable at 4-4-4-12 at 2.0V.

Cons: none

Great board

DFI LP DK X48-T2RSB PLUS LGA 775 Intel X48 ATX Intel Motherboard
DFI LP DK X48-T2RSB PLUS LGA 775 Intel X48 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: - 8 segment LED displays on board make overclocking easy - Seems to have very good memory overclocking stability - X48 chipset so you can run Crossfire the way it is supposed to work - Lots of SATA ports - Best overclocking BIOS in the industry

Cons: - angled SATA ports are hard to get to sometimes.

Excellent Switch

SMC LG-ERICSSON SMCGS8 Unmanaged Unmanaged 8 Ports Compact Switches

Pros: Good price. All the features that actually effect performance. Reliable. No internal fans. Has worked perfectly from day one and has exceeded my expectations for reliability.

Cons: None really. It is a little bit hard to tell which lights are on on the front panel (from a distance) because that information is printed next to the LED windows and the pattern of the lights doesn't necessarily allow you to determine which ones are which. I had a Linksys router that had different colors of LED for different things and the pattern of LEDs that were usually on allowed you to determine, even without being able to read the labels on the front, which lights were on after you had memorized the normal pattern. This switch doesn't have an LED pattern that allows one to do that so easily, but this is really not a big deal at all.

Good deal

G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL5D-4GBPQ
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL5D-4GBPQ

Pros: Price. Dark blue heat spreaders look better in person than they do in the picture. They perform better than the specifications suggest they should.

Cons: One of the two sticks was bad, (failed Memtest86/Memtest86+ repeatedly in the same general address range no matter what voltage or speed or timings I used.) I sent that pair back and got another via RMA, which works perfectly. Would be 5 eggs if it weren't for the annoying bad stick and associated cost and wait of shipping it back. Bad RAM happens though, so I can't really fault them too much for it. (They could run Memtest86 on them and find those errors themselves, I suppose.)

Overall Review: I am running them on an Asus P5E-VM HDMI, (G35 Northbridge,) along with two other (different) sticks of Patriot RAM for a total of 8GB. The processor is a Q6600. Everything is running faster than stock speeds and it is rock solid. (I mention all of this because some motherboards like some RAM better than others and the number of sticks / capacity of the sticks sometimes makes a difference.)

Awesome case

Rosewill R5604-BK 0.8mm Japanese Cold Rolled Steel Dual 120mm Fans Screw-Less design ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Tool-free design works very well, which surprised me. Case does not flex unlike many. Internal 3.5" drive bays turned sideways make it very easy to get them in and out. Two 120mm fans provide good air flow, and the duct that is attached to the inside of the side door is adjustable/removeable. LEDs/controls on top is useful to me. Everything goes in without interference, which is rare in computer cases. Side door opens/comes off very easily, yet is tightly attached when fastened. I've built many machines over the years, and this is by far the best case I have ever used.

Cons: The door on the front is a bit flimsy, but it has been fine so far. The tabs on the drive bay covers are just as fragile as they usually are, and I broke one during the process of putting the machine together. All cases have that problem, apparently.

Overall Review: It was $39 when I bought it. Why is it $59 now?
