Nice overall

ZALMAN Ultra Quiet Notebook Cooler ZM-NC1500-B
ZALMAN Ultra Quiet Notebook Cooler ZM-NC1500-B

Pros: Great inclined angle for desktop use though not entirely optimal for use on your lap. Almost completely inaudible at full-speed... any laptop you're going to put on it is going to make enough noise that you probably won't be able to tell if this thing's fans are actually spinning without picking the laptop off of it and actually looking.

Cons: Quietness is obviously at the expense of fan-speed and thus air-flow.

Overall Review: If you have really real heat problems, get a different cooler as this one just doesn't move that much air (I've had good luck with one of Antec's coolers). If you're lappy just gets a little over-warm and you just need to get a little air current underneath it, and/or if you use it primarily on a desk/table, this thing couldn't be more perfect.

Worked pretty well for about three years

Supermicro X9SAE-V Desktop Motherboard - Intel C216 Chipset - Socket H2 LGA-1155 - Retail Pack
Supermicro X9SAE-V Desktop Motherboard - Intel C216 Chipset - Socket H2 LGA-1155 - Retail Pack

Pros: Worked well for 3 years. Didn't have IPMI but had a somewhat functional Intel Management Engine instead. Lots of slots. Cheaper unbuffered memory

Cons: Intel IME was way more of a PITA to configure than a regular IPMI and you end up needing to buy VNC Viewer Plus to actually use it. Had a couple of idiosyncrasies but was able to work past them. Worked until it didn't. Warm reboot led to... Died at 3.5 years. - Memory Channel 1 invisible/not working - Several PCIe slots invisible/not working - On-cpu video not working As this is the primary storage server for my home business, this is less than ideal. 3 years out of functionality out of a motherboard is somewhat below my expectation.

Overall Review: Doesn't seem to be a clear path forward. The X9SAE-V is discontinued. There is no X10 or X11 series E3-focused motherboard that meets the slot requirement. The X9SRL-F, an E5 uniproc version has all my IO and would let me use existing memory but the reviews are disconcerting. The X10 series is just another money dump... sigh.

Great for what it is!

Microsoft Sculpt Mobile Mouse - Black (43U-00001)
Microsoft Sculpt Mobile Mouse - Black (43U-00001)

Pros: Been using it off and on for many months now. It's light, more solid-feeling than it probably actually is, and works flawlessly.

Cons: Doesn't use a fancier tracking system. Although the blue led is different, it seems to have the same issues tracking with tracking on various surfaces as a red led. It's definitely no competition with an IR laser-based product in the "works on everything" category, but it's cheaper than those products too. Doesn't come with a protective bag/sleeve but it fits just fine the bag from my old VX Nano.

Overall Review: Bought this to replace my worn out Logitech VX Nano. Logitech has really dropped the ball in the mobile/laptop mouse arena (and arguably several others, but that's a separate discussion). This is cheaper than any current legitimate competition and is a far sturdier device. The only thing it's missing is a better tracking system but it works very well as long as the surface is friendly. I totally recommend it to peers over any other current competition. Did I mention I miss the IR Laser?

I love these things.

Noctua NF-A4x10 FLX, Premium Quiet Fan, 3-Pin (40x10mm, Brown)
Noctua NF-A4x10 FLX, Premium Quiet Fan, 3-Pin (40x10mm, Brown)

Pros: You get what you pay for. These things are pretty silent, are perfectly sized to mount on all sorts of add-on-card heatsinks, and light enough not to care about the added weight stressing anything. Comes with all sorts of optional mounting stuff as well as extensions and adapters for connecting it to various power options. I've had a few running for years with no issues.

Cons: Absolutely nothing. The price is higher than a lot of alternative options but, again, I think you're getting what you pay for here.

Overall Review: Just bought 6 more to have around!

Recommend: Buy

macally PHR-S250U3B Aluminum 2.5" SATA I/II/III USB 3.0 & 1394b SuperSpeed HDD Storage Enclosure
macally PHR-S250U3B Aluminum 2.5" SATA I/II/III USB 3.0 & 1394b SuperSpeed HDD Storage Enclosure

Pros: This is at least my fifth Macally 2.5" enclosure over the last ten years or so and I keep coming back. The enclosure is very robust thanks to its sturdy all-metal case*. A very sturdy product that does exactly what it says in the marketing. A great product line for keeping your high-capacity portable drive safe. *The end caps are plastic, but the main drive+controller length chassis is a solid piece of aluminum.

Cons: Don't use Macally cases for drives that pull a lot of power (and thus need to dissipate a lot of heat). The case is not vented and, while it is slightly ribbed, cooling is entirely passive. You will burn up the disk and/or controller if you use a top-end 7200rpm disk in these cases. Been there, done that, learned from it.

Overall Review: Comes with a USB3 A to micro-B cable. IF you need to use this with a USB2 interface at some point, you will need a USB2 "Y" A to micro-B cable. To be more clear, a USB2 "Y" cable is a USB2 cable with an extra "A" connector to draw additional power from a second USB port for drives that need to pull more than 500mA, which will be pretty much anything other than an SSD. Singleprice Product ID 5620 + a miniB->microB adapter off of Jungle is what you want. These are perfect for older 9.5mm WD Greens or current WD Reds, but I've generally had 9.5mm 5400rpm HGST/Hitachi drives in these cases over the years. Also, I've not tested the firewire functionality on any macally enclosures since the PATA days, so my applicable experience is entirely with the SATA3/SATA2 interfaces.

Never gone wrong buying Verbatim

Verbatim DVD+R DL 8.5GB 8X with Branded Surface - 50pk Spindle
Verbatim DVD+R DL 8.5GB 8X with Branded Surface - 50pk Spindle

Pros: Been preferentially buying/using Verbatim optical media for more than a decade. I don't recall a single bad burn or failure-to-read that I can in any way blame on the media. CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RAM, DVD+R, DVD+R DL, BD-R You generally pay a bit more for this brand but then you do tend to get what you pay for. Speaking specifically about product ID 97000: I've been through at least 100 of these discs over the last two years alone with most of them being used for work-related activities, and I just bought another 50-pack after having run out yet again.

Cons: Generally pricier than alternative products.

Overall Review: You get what you pay for. Accept no substitutes.
