Rosewill RNX-A8-EX Omni-Directional Antenna with Extension Cable and Magnetic Base 2.4 GHz Indoor 8 dBi High Performance Detachable
Rosewill RNX-A8-EX Omni-Directional Antenna with Extension Cable and Magnetic Base 2.4 GHz Indoor 8 dBi High Performance Detachable

Pros: Wireless signal increased from "Low" to "High" immediately after installation.

Cons: Long antenna is looooong. This isn't really a con, just the nature of a receiving antenna. Bigger antenna = better reception. This antenna is nearly twice as long as the antenna it replaced on the PCI adapter.

Overall Review: Although the number of bars of reception did not increase, the signal strength did. This product did prove to be a worthy investment. As others have noted the magnetic base is strong. Plunk that bad boy down on some metal and it ain't going nowhere fast.

Most Critical Review

Refurb? No.

EVGA GeForce GTX 580 (Fermi) 3GB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 Graphics Card 03G-P3-1584-RB
EVGA GeForce GTX 580 (Fermi) 3GB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 Graphics Card 03G-P3-1584-RB

Pros: None. Non-functional hardware.

Cons: Having to pay to ship back an item advertised as working when it in fact was not. NewEgg and EVGA have to both take blame here though. At the end of the day, I still don't have a new video card but now I'm out $14. So I'm punished for buying from NewEgg?

Overall Review: To be fair to EVGA, the card did appear to work correctly for several minutes. Then, the screen went black and the fan kicked up to 100% under zero load, desktop the foreground application. But this is where my grievance with EVGA comes in: item came in a box with an assurance sticker sealing it. Someone checked the card out, but apparently this process isn't stringent enough to catch defects such as I encountered. I definitely will pass on all future "Refurbished" items from here on.

2nd DOA in a Row from Asus

ASUS P8Z68-V PRO LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS
ASUS P8Z68-V PRO LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

Pros: Solid looking. Spec list is nice.

Cons: Performs the same as the P8P67 I just RMA'd. Begins to install Windows 7 x64, then just reboots. Tried multiple components and a basic setup with one optical drive, one HDD, onboard video and one stick of RAM. This board also exhibited some weirdness where it would power up for 1 sec. then immediately shutdown after making certain BIOS changes. Then it would not even attempt to boot until clearing CMOS and removing the battery for approx. 2 minutes. This really increased trial and error time to attempt solving the issue.

Overall Review: I've read Asus tech support is a joke, and it's true. I sent them an email and it's like they copy/pasted a form response and told me to clear the CMOS. Either that or my stating I cleared the CMOS and removed the battery can be interpreted as I hadn't performed that? Their next suggestion was to RMA. Since I already performed their 1st suggestion multiple times, I'll execute the RMA but I won't be choosing Asus again at this time. I gave Asus 2 shots and they blew it. Now I'm a month with components and no new system. Moving on to Gigabyte or EVGA now.

Refused to Install Windows 7

ASUS P8P67 (REV 3.0) LGA 1155 Intel P67 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS
ASUS P8P67 (REV 3.0) LGA 1155 Intel P67 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

Pros: None.

Cons: This board showed a random restart issue. During the installation process, it would get to "Expanding Windows files", which would never get over 0% and then restart and begin the process anew. Even sitting at the first screen of the Windows 7 installation doing nothing, it would restart on it's own. After several hours of trial and error and lost production time, I've concluded the board was non-functional. Tested with multiple RAM sticks and two different power supplies.

Overall Review: Through my trial and error process I learned that problems with the P867 line of boards is apparently common. Joy. Going to RMA and rethink what I need to get for an 1155 board.

Very Nice

Corsair Force 2.5" 80GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) CSSD-F80GBP2-BRKT
Corsair Force 2.5" 80GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) CSSD-F80GBP2-BRKT

Pros: This drive performs well above a 7200 RPM platter drive. Every task I've performed from installing Windows 7, MS Office, and booting the OS and installed applications is extremely snappy.

Cons: So far I have not experienced anywhere near the advertised read/write speeds with this drive. My speeds are both ~123 MB/s. This is the first SSD I have used and I still consider my experience with this product very good.

Overall Review: Because of the way lower than advertised read/write speeds I've experienced I give it a 4/5. It's possible I may need to do some tweaks in Windows 7 to get closer to those speeds, but again it's been a good product.

It's a cable!

BYTECC USB2-6MIN Black USB 2.0 Type A Male to Mini B Male Cable
BYTECC USB2-6MIN Black USB 2.0 Type A Male to Mini B Male Cable

Pros: Cheap! The Egg was able to spank anything I could buy retail, with shipping. Cable also has shielding which is important.

Cons: The formed plastic on the Mini end is wide and may not fit certain devices if the port is inset into the device's casing. This was just not something I thought about checking, so make sure you look at your cable before purchasing. This is not a con for the product itself, just my particular situation.

Overall Review: Using a rotary tool I was able to shave down the plastic and make this cable work with no problems. Newegg rocks!
