Do the brackets slide along the rail so that tv can be centered above a fireplace? If the back is installed to the studs then is there give in the other parts.

Yes the brackets do slide along the wall mount rail. The wall mount rail also has various mounting holes to get the mount as close to centered as possible and then you can slide the brackets along the mount. However the wall mount rail is fairly large (approx 30 inches) so with a smaller TV (32-36 inches) you might not have that much to adjust before the wall mount rail is visible behind the TV. The TV I used is 48 inches and it worked fine.
