I have a intel 12400, is it worth upgrading to the 14600 or should i save to get a AMD 7800X3D?

with that upgrade, I do not believe you need a new motherboard so financially it would be cheaper. However, if you’re building a gaming machine, AMD’s 3dx chips with the V-cash right on the CPU are way better. but you’ll have a considerable investment of a new motherboard, CPU and RAM.

Hi @BanchanMan, there are several factors to take into consideration here.

  • If you’re currently on a Core i5-12400/12400F, there’s a good chance you might be using DDR4 - and that means it would be a bigger deal to upgrade to an AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D, because besides the CPU and motherboard, you’d also need DDR5.
  • On the other hand, your cooler, PSU, and GPU matter for any upgrade. If you’re currently using a small cooler like the stock cooler on your Core i5 12400/12400F, then a Core i5 14600K (We assume you meant the K model) is not going to work within the capabilities of that cooler.
  • Your GPU is also a big deal here - if you’re upgrading CPUs, is it even the limiting factor? If you’re currently running a lower-midrange GPU such as a GeForce RTX 3070 or a Radeon RX 6700 XT, you might see little to no difference upgrading your CPU in gaming.
  • The 12400 is a P-core-only design, with six cores, while the 14600K is a much more sophisticated hybrid-core design with 6 P-cores and 8 E-cores, making it way better for productivity purposes.

TL;DR more information is needed about your current GPU, motherboard, memory, power supply, cooling, and what you intend to use the PC for.

Save and make the switch to AM5. Theres more upgrade options as there will likely be new AM5 CPUs to be released into the upcoming years. This can not be said about the 14th generation Intel CPUs
