I have an i5-12400F, rtx 3080, 16gb ddr4, and 1000w gold psu. I have been thinking about upgrading my cpu to a better AMD cpu. Just asking for any tips on what to do next.
Hey Bastin did you have a budget in mind? You would need the change the motherboard & ram also if you went to a AM5 chip AM4 you should be able to keep the ram. either way lots of upgrade choices from a i5-12400
Kegun is correct, you are prety much going to be replacing 80% of your computer to accomplish what you want. You need to plan out exactly what you want. At this point I would forgo AM4 and build on the AM5 platform, it is almost end of life. You could reuse the 3080 for now to save a big chunk of cash. Eventualy you will be upgrading that too. At least it has more than 8gb so it has a bit more life in it. You will be looking at an investment of $600-$700. Maybe a 9600x, motherboard, 32gb of expo compatible RAM and a 1Tb M.2 SSD.
I don’t necessarily have a budget but under $1000 would be great.
is it strictly a gaming computer or general use an gaming?
Gaming, I’ve been playing fps games like marvel rivals, overwatch 2, r6, also been wanting to play cod. Also my cooler is a thermaltake assassin air cooler wondering if that should be upgraded too?
If you can swing it,I highly recomend a x3d chip for gaming even last gen 7800x3d is very good. 9600x & 9700x are more of jack of all trades type. Still good For gaming but the x3d cpu’s are really designed for it.
If you go with a 9600x or 9700x your cooler should work. they are only 65 watts
I think I’ll stick to the idea for the 9600x because I still would like to save some money and I don’t need anything too intense because I also do plenty of programming and 3d modeling.
your cooler should be ok.
Thanks a lot! Now I’ll just wait for a good sale here on Newegg, like a combo sale.
Good luck
If you have Micro Center nearby, their CPU, motherboard, and RAM combo deals are unmatched.
