This my grandpa HP Omen PC Desktop 880 series. I need advice on to improve it. Specs are i7-7700K Cpu, Nivida Geforce GTX 1080, PU is 500 watts maybe 600, motherboard HP Tampa 8307.
not to sound harsh, but there’s really no upgrading it. It’s really time to start all over.![]()
Thanks for advice. It can. But it be literal Frankenstein build. Cause according site. PU is 500 watts. Though I don’t think so. I think maybe 600 or 550.
Yeah I agree @Viraco, I think the best thing @PlayerPHX if you want any meaningful upgrade, it is best to upgrade everything. Most of these parts are 5-10 years old.
sorry for the short answer before, I was busy.
You’re very limited on what you can do because of the motherboard. Your Tampa 8307 board uses the first revision of the LGA 1151 socket, designed for 6th-gen (Skylake) and 7th-gen (Kaby Lake) CPUs only. I’m pretty sure your current processor is the fastest CPU that board will Accept, but maybe someone can correct me if I’m wrong. You would have to change the motherboard, which probably is next to impossible considering it’s an HP and it’s probably proprietary for that case. At that point you’re starting to build a whole new PC. The best You can do Is possibly add some ram (not sure how much you have) and upgrade the GPU. maybe a used Nvidia 3000 series (3070 maybe) I wouldn’t go higher than that with that CPU.
List: Just quick options. You’ll have to do some more research or look for used pricing.
DDR4 ram
GPU
PSU- if needed
The problem is you’ll spend that money and still have a PC that is obsolete. Your better off just saving and starting over.
Thanks for all the advice means a lot.
Hey @PlayerPHX
The processor being a Core i7 7700K does NOT support the official requirements for Windows 11. You can run Windows 10, but you’d need to set it up for the extended security updates, and that will only last you until next October.
Your best bet here is to run Linux. If the aim is to run games, I highly recommend checking out Nobara Linux as it comes preloaded with most of what you’ll need to get up and running, including nvidia drivers. Then, when you can, upgrade the GPU to a newer Radeon card such as an RX 6700 XT.
Thanks for a device. Can the Cpu push to RTX 4060?
Can it push to 4060?
NVIDIA drivers take a lot of CPU power to run, so if you have an old CPU, NVIDIA cards will run worse.
AMD drivers, on the other hand, don’t take a lot of CPU power.
You could use an RTX 4060 but the performance will be worse than expected even for an RTX 4060. A WAY better idea in the $250-300 range would be to pick up a used RX 6700XT or 6750XT.
Keep in mind the 7700K CPU is from 2017, it’s 8 years old, almost 9 years old (it launched January 2017, so January 2026 will be 9 years.) You REALLY need to keep that in mind when upgrading other components.
It isn’t to upgradable at this point, so starting over is your best bet. If your going to start over saying your budget is around $1,500 you could build a pc with a 9600x and 5070.
Thanks mean a lot.
Not sure. I believe with the 3070 the CPU might bottleneck just a bit. I used to recomend 6000 series AMD’s. But with the recent revelation that they will no longer be truly supporting those GPUs anymore makes me weary of them ( lack of day one updates now) unless you can get one at a really good price. Which is a shame cause AMD was giving you more vram with their GPUs. A GPU with 16gb really makes a difference. Maybe you can find a used 6700xt 12gb or a 6800 16gb for reduced price now. **(you could try Jawa)**I don’t think you will be playing the late games anyways with that machine.
like this maybe
They are still “truly supporting those GPUs.” Maybe you missed the announcement where they clarified. This doesn’t mean they won’t be releasing bugfixes for new games on day one. What it means is they aren’t going to continue trying to tweak existing performance issues, since the GPUs are a few years old they feel they’ve milked all the performance they can from the cards.
Security updates and bugfix / glitchfix issues are still happening. The doomsday mentality is completely sickening.
ahh , makes sense. seemed a bit early for end of life on those. which is good because I absolutely love my 6800 XT when I owned it
You can still buy a new RX 6800 XT still see XFX and some off brands like Yeston
but only supports single DP interface output on that brand. Problem is it’s not much more powerful then RTX 5060 Ti 16G for bout the same price
