My PC was built in 2020 and I am still on the AM4 platform. I currently have a 5800x, with a zotac 3070. Is it worth it upgrading to the 5800x3D or should I save that money and switch to the next platform in a year or so?
Thank you

Personally, I’d leave the system alone and start planning for a larger upgrade.
The 5800X3D is still the king of AM4, and AMD is re-releasing it on June 25, 2026, for around $350. If you were coming from a 3600, 3700X, or even a 5600X, I’d recommend it without hesitation. But you’re already running a 5800X, so this isn’t the kind of upgrade that’s going to completely transform your gaming experience.
The 5800X3D would still provide benefits such as better 1% lows, smoother frame pacing, and improved performance in CPU-heavy games like MMOs, strategy titles, simulations, Tarkov, and Factorio. The upgrade is real. I just don’t think it’s a large enough jump from a 5800X to justify $350.
I also think the RTX 3070 8GB is becoming the older part of the system. Modern games continue to push VRAM usage higher, especially at 1440p, and the 8GB of V-RAM is likely to become a limitation before the 5800X does.
Now look at the total cost. If you buy the 5800X3D for $350 this June and then later decide to replace the RTX 3070 with something like a refurbished RTX 4070 for around $450, you’ve invested roughly $800 (or more) into a platform that has already reached the end of its upgrade path.
At that point you’re still on AM4, still on DDR4, and still on a motherboard platform that won’t receive future CPU generations.
That’s why I’d probably keep the 5800X, enjoy the system as it is, and start putting money aside for an eventual AM5 build. The 5800X remains a very capable gaming processor in 2026, and for someone already on Zen 3, I think the smarter long-term move is saving toward the next platform rather than investing heavily in the final AM4 upgrade.
Hi Viraco, thank you for the advice. I completely agree, the costs of upgrading for an old platform doesn’t seem worth it at this point. I’ll use my money for a more future proof build. Appreciate it!
