I have under $1000 to spend after tax and shipping. I don’t play heavy games. I really only need it to play Minecraft and record. What pc do you guys recommend?
Here are a few options to give you a solid starting point.
At this price range, the biggest thing to watch out for is prebuilts that use outdated components. A common example would be systems equipped with Nvidia GTX-series GPUs or Intel 10th- and 11th-generation processors. While they may look like good deals, they’re already aging and can limit performance and longevity. You’re in a tough spot right now because the PC market is still relatively expensive, but if you can save another $300 to $400, you’ll be able to get a significantly more powerful and future-proof machine. Spending a little more upfront often means you won’t need to upgrade as quickly. I know it’s tempting to buy only what you need today, but it rarely works out that way, as software and hardware demands continue to grow over time.
That being said, if you’re shopping in the $900 to $1,000 range, aim for a system with an Intel Core i5-14400F or a comparable AMD Ryzen 5 processor. Pairing that with a modern GPU like an RTX 4060 or 5060—or an AMD Radeon RX 7600—will provide solid performance for gaming, productivity, and general use. You should also consider Intel Arc GPUs, such as the A750 or A770, as they often deliver excellent performance for the price and can be a great value in a well-balanced system. Realistically, most systems at this price point will include 16GB of RAM, which will work for now and can be upgraded to 32GB later. A 1TB NVMe SSD is ideal for fast load times and enough storage for modern applications and games. You should also look for a reputable 600W to 650W power supply and ensure the system offers room for future upgrades. Avoid anything with older GTX graphics or significantly dated CPUs, as those systems tend to feel obsolete much sooner.
Overall, the key is to prioritize modern components and a clear upgrade path. Even within your current budget, choosing the right hardware will give you the best value and ensure the system remains capable for years to come.
Are you willing to build it yourself? If so I recommend you look at a 250KF + 5060 as a starting point for the build. Minecraft is quite CPU demanding, thus the (according to conventional wisdom) mildly unbalanced configuration. For the CPU, B860 motherboards (and even some Z890 boards) are quite cheap, and 16GB of DDR5 is… well it’s definitely coming down in price.
