Pros: Thunderbolt 3 Device works - Using Atech Flash BlackJet Cinema Dock. Card uses latest Intel DSL7540 Thunderbolt 3 controller with latest Firmware. Driver on Gigabyte website, same as driver on CD. Using on Gigabyte X399 AORUS Xtreme & Gigabyte X399 Designare Ex. Those are the only (2) X399 Motherboards with THB_C Header aka GPIO 5 Pin Header.
Cons: The current Thunderbolt Enumeration Mode - Firmware only supports native mode and not legacy mode. No Bios support; The GPIO 5 Pin Header seems to be useless without Bios support. Although Intel says, backwards compatible, Gigabyte has yet to get that part right in a Firmware Update for legacy Thunderbolt 1 & 2 support. Even the TI Forums regarding the TI Power Delivery controller has lots of questions where Vendors are asking how and TI says contact Intel about how to make the Intel technology part work. We tried using a Startech adapter for Thunderbolt 2 so we could access our Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio Pro 2 SSD Recorder. We can see the Device but we cannot access the SSD within the Device. Bummer.
Overall Review: Recommend? Yes. Bleeding Edge Technology! However, since USB4 is announced, this will all soon be a mute point. USB-IF claims USB4 will incorporate Thunderbolt 3 support with backward compatibility for Thunderbolt 1 & 2 and all prior USB devices. A lofty goal. We will see how that plays out. On an X399 Threadripper - Yes! X370 Ryzen - No go. We tried a Titan Ridge on a MSI X370 XPOWER Gaming Titanium Motherboard + Ryzen 1800X CPU - No Boot in x8 Slot 2 to CPU. Tried in x4 Slot to chipset, erratic behavior. System Booted into Windows but screen flickered and resolution was jumping. Messy. x16 Video card (AMD WX7100) did not like running at x8. That's hopefully, all going to change with USB4. USB4 will still require 4 PCIe 3.0 Lanes. Which translates to a x4 PCIe USB4 I/O card. In the mean time... For anyone wanting to try this card, some Users have been able to Jump GPIO Pins 3 to 5. We tried that with the X370 to no avail. Not brave enough (success), or dumb enough (fail), to try it on anything else yet. Your results may vary.
