When upgrading or building a new computer, choose video cards with graphics processing units (GPU) and central processing units (CPU) that can meet your needs. High-performance units can manage intensive gaming sessions, CAD, graphic design and video editing and maximize your computer's performance. First, consider the Thermal Design Power (TDP). The TDP represents the maximum heat generated by a component. Treat this as the operational ceiling for your system. TDP indicates how much power your graphics card will need and how much heat it produces, with more capable cards requiring higher power or additional GPU cooling components to function correctly. Next, consideration of component connectors is essential. Most video cards today perform well with contemporary monitors to provide striking displays while accommodating multiple screens. Common connectors include DP (DisplayPort), DVI (Digital Visual Interface), Thunderbolt®, and USB or USB-C™, providing plug-and-play capabilities for a quick setup.
When selecting video devices and graphics cards, choose a screen resolution and desired performance specifications and select PC components that match those requirements. Modern PC games, like popular AAA titles, require capable graphics cards with more VRAM that can handle higher processing rates which helps increase rendering speeds and prevent latency. The cards have memory ranging from as little as 64MB, while 8GB, 12GB and 16GB remain good choices for mainstream and high-performance builds. Higher memory options also exist for premium systems. Desktop graphics cards with 2GB to 4GB of memory meet the needs of most creative professionals. Gamers require 8GB to 12GB of memory for less lag and latency during play, and top-end cards offer up to 24GB of memory and fast connectivity. Basic laptops for internet browsing and productivity applications only need up to 1GB. Finally, consider premium graphics cards that improve overall performance for serious gaming and running high-end video software.
GDDR (Graphics Double Data Rate) is a specialized, fast-rendering memory for graphics cards. GDDR6 is the current iteration of this technology, with Samsung offering 24Gbps GDDR6 DRAM in next-generation graphics cards and mid-tier GDDR6 cards offering 16GB and 12GB DRAM. GDDR5 and GDDR5X are previous versions with reduced data rates of 13GBps, but identical 32-bit read/write access as GDDR6.
Creative professionals can use workstation graphics cards designed to handle the demands of power-intensive applications. Remember, workstation graphics cards are more expensive due to the inclusion of increased and higher quality drivers versus desktop cards, but they also offer less performance than desktop cards. The memory on these graphics cards will usually start at around 8GB and have professional pixel resolution to produce high-quality images. Entry-level cards support basic computer use, like surfing, checking emails and creating spreadsheets. Mid-tier cards like Intel's ARC™ can support standard gaming on unoptimized settings. Connect multiple desktop graphics cards by selecting options with either SLI® or NVLink™ support, depending on whether you have Nvidia® or AMD® hardware. Verify the space inside your PC case when choosing video cards, as the additional fans and PC cooling systems require more installation room. Case interiors are size-rated based on the motherboard's dimension, with three common form factors available: ATX, MicroATX, and Mini-ITX. Dedicated video cards often feature improved driver compatibility and support, which benefits users switching to different operating systems, or who need to run specific software. Consider 4K gaming cards for playing the latest multiplayer titles or enjoying crisp streaming media for optimal displays.
Ray Traced graphics are supported by current generations of NVIDIA® GeForce RTX and AMD® Radeon RX graphics cards. While ray tracing without dedicated hardware is possible, the latest advancements happen by way of dedicated cores built into your GPU. Tensor cores that were added alongside the CUDA cores that traditionally handle the graphics load in gaming desktops and laptops. Adding tensor cores into the mix allows graphics cards to handle more advanced workloads, most notably crunching number sets that are involved in machine learning.
Embedded artificial intelligence is a term for enhanced GPUs that allow devices to run AI-model software directly in their operational tasks. This advancement removes dependence on cloud-based AI. Additionally, this AI can produce predictive and reactive intelligence. Other benefits of embedded AI include generating advanced analytics and business insights and automating key processes to improve customer service and risk management.
A range of video card accessories allows you to get the full benefit from your existing card or when upgrading. Adapters let you upgrade older systems, even if you don't have the right connections. Use a second graphics card by installing an SLI® bridge if you have Nvidia® hardware or a NVLink™ bridge if you have AMD® hardware. Check out the external graphics enclosures and docking stations if you want to upgrade your laptop without opening it up. Use slot extenders, braces, and adapters for convenient installation. External power supplies let you connect workstation graphics cards so they share the load on the motherboard. Check the specifications and connections on your chosen graphics card to match it with the accessories.
PC VR platforms require robust graphics cards to operate effectively. The high demand requires, at a minimum, a mid-tier workstation graphics card with optimal performance levels. For best outcomes, consider high-end video cards like NVIDIA® RTX and AMD® RX devices.
