Can this be used as a primary drive, As in a C drive/bootable?

Yes, as long as your motherboard supports it and most motherboards that support M2 do.  It behaves just like a normal hard drive but faster.

PCIe? NVMe? SATA?

It's NVMe (which will use PCIe lanes).  A bit surprised it's not directly listed (does show on Samsung site), but another way to tell is the bandwidth. Barring a RAID, there's no way SATA can hit the 970 numbers.

Question 3

I've seen a few people complain about missing standoff screws...  Can someone please explain this?  Does it come with them?  If not, do you actually need them?

I have bought many m.2 SSDs from many companies and most dont come with any screws. The screws either come with the motherboards if you have a desktop or are already inside laptops screw hole if you have a laptop.

My motherboard is an ASUS PRIME X370 PRO.  The manual says it has an M.2 slot compatible with 2280 and other sizes, and can be set in the BIOS to either SATA or PCIe 3.0 x 4 modes.  My ASUS manual, however, says nothing about supporting the NVMe standard explicitly.  So is this SSD compatible with my motherboard or not?  I couldn't really get a straight answer from ASUS or Samsung on this.

I have one of these in a Prime z590 m plus.  I had issues initially where the system would not post intermittently. Two bios updates later and all is well now.  Check the change logs for the latest bios updates for you MB to see if ASUS add stability updates or updates for the m.2 slots.  Mine works fine now.

Question 6

Are the standoff screws strictly necessary? My motherboard has some screws whose tops would line up with where the drive would lie--are those them?

There is the hole for the standoff. The standoff is what provides support between the motherboard and the m.2 ssd so it will line up with the m.2 motherboard connector. If you have multiple of these in a row, then you should be able to move the standoff to any of these positions to support the different m.2 sizes. There is a possibility you might not have all sizes available. I believe there are 4 different sizes off the top of my head.

Then there is the screw that screws into the standoff to keep the m.2 ssd in place. There is a notch at the opposite end of the connector on the ssd so the screw will screw into the standoff while at the same time holding the m.2 ssd in place.

Sorry about being long winded but pictures would be of a great benefit to help but I don't believe they can be posted. Plus I wasn't sure if you were talking about the standoff or the screws that go into the standoff because they are both screws so I provided the best description I could. I would believe both of them to be required because they hold the m.2 in place and provide the proper spacing.

will it works for HP Spectre x360 Convertible 15-df0xxx?

I did some reading on the HP support forum where I suggest you look more thoroughly than I was able to. This question seems to be asked many times there but I didn't see your exact model having been asked (all up to the df0xxx). The answer should come from them but also depends on it's age. From a tech stand point, if it was preloaded with Win10 then it would be new enough to take advantage of it. I say it that way because in older models it should still work, but might not be used to it's full potential and if you are installing an OS on it you may need to also load NVMe drivers (and chipset drivers) if it isn't seen during install. This is one of the more common types of M.2 and unless your laptop is 4+ years old I would say no problem, but it is still worth you checking out the HP forum in more detail about your specific motherboard.

Is the 970 Evo Plus faster all around than the ole 970 Evo Pro? I heard the latter is still better on write performance.

Need to use up my gift card. Been waiting since 2018 for something faster than the 970 Evo. Is it worth using on the 970 Evo Plus now, or wait longer? Why hasn't Samsung come out with a 980 or 990 Evo Pro by now? Has the technology topped out?
