Server processors provide optimal reliability and energy efficiency. Their quality impacts the performance of your data center and, consequently, your business. Whether you need a CPU for a small start-up or a big cloud-based service, there are plenty of models to choose from.

Servers Processors vs. Desktop Processors

A server processor undergoes stricter quality controls than a desktop to minimize downtime and data losses. This typically increases the cost of a server-grade CPU in comparison with a desktop one. Server processors also tend to have more bandwidth, to process large amounts of data, and a larger cache. In some dual-processor servers, the CPU can failover, i.e., transfer control to the other CPU in case of failure. The average desktop CPU can't do this. Both desktop-grade and server-grade processors can contain multiple cores, but the latter tend to have more cores. Some server processors from the Intel® Xeon® range have 56 cores, while most desktop CPUs are dual-core or quad-core.

Intel Xeon Processors Deliver an Outstanding Performance

Intel Xeon processors are suitable for highly-demanding data centers. The Intel Xeon E series is entry-level. These processors can provide reliability and security to small businesses. They can have up to eight cores and 16MB of Intel Smart Cache. Dedicated to creative professionals, the Intel Xeon W processors have extra features for 3D CAD and AI development. The models from the W-2200 range have up to 14 cores and 19.25MB of Intel Smart Cache, while the models from the W-3200 range have up to 28 cores and 38.5MB of Smart Cache.

Xeon Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze Processors Offer Scalability Options

Xeon offers a range of scalable CPU processors: Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze. They're capable of running complex AI workloads quickly and efficiently. The Intel Xeon Platinum processors can have up to 56 cores and up to eight CPU sockets, for superior scalability. The Xeon Gold processors feature up to 24 cores and four CPU sockets. The Intel Xeon Silver processors have up to 16 cores and two CPU sockets, while the Intel Xeon Bronze processors have up to 6 cores and CPU sockets, to meet the needs of small businesses.

AMD Epyc® and Opteron® Server Processors Balance Performance and Energy Efficiency

AMD offers both consumer-level computer processors, for gamers and tech enthusiasts, and business processors. For servers, the brand offers the Epyc® and Opteron series. The second-generation Epyc server processors broke over 140 world records and offer secure encrypted virtualization to keep data safe. They can have up to 64 cores and 256MB of cache. The Opteron A1100 series uses the ARM® Cortex® core to boost performance and energy efficiency. These processors feature a System-on-a-Chip (SoC) integration of 14 SATA3 ports. The Opteron X2170 features AMD's Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture to deliver excellent graphics. Thanks to the x86 SoC technology, this model has the CPU, GPU and I/O controller on a single die.
