Can this chip be used in a workstation to replace an i7 5820k with an X99 motherboard setup? I guess this is more of a platform question? it looks like it. thanks

It cannot, the 8000-series Intel Chips can only be used on z370 motherboards unfortunately (there will be more board chipsets eventually, but the only ones that have been released are the z370).

You would have to replace your motherboard as well at the very least.

How long will it take, for people who ordered the CPU when they were back ordered, to have their chip sent out to them?

I just ordered mine yesterday with the bundle. I was shipped out to my address this morning. You guys might wanna use the auto-notify function so that you will be notified when the stock is in. Do take note though, the individual chipset is still out of stocks when I went to newegg yesterday. However, the bundles were available. I guess they are trying to sell by bundle for now.

How does this compare to the i7 7900x skylake? I will be pairing with a gtx 1080ti

Well, the 7900x is a 10 core processor and the 8700K is 6 cores.

The 8700K has better single core performance according the the benchmarks but isn't going to come close to the multicore performance of the 10 core cpu.

At the end of the day it depends what you plan to use it for. The 7900x will be much better for things like video editing and encoding and other intense workstation tasks, where as the 8700k will probably be a better option for gaming. Keep in mind the 7900x is $1400 USD vs the 8700K at $360 USD.

Yes, I currently have it in my machine running at 5Ghz. No it doesn't spike over 60C and no it doesn't suck up enough electricity to power a city.

So this is a VR designed cpu, will it be a great cpu for normal monitor pc games?

This is just a CPU. It works pretty good for modern games and productive loads. "Designed for VR" indicates a certain level of performance. That said, it is slightly out of date and there are newer and better options available on the market.

This won't work on the Z170 correct? only Z370?

Yeah, only the z370 unfortunately.  There are a couple of z270 motherboards that are rumored to work but I wouldn't risk it.

Is this affected by meltdown and spectre?

Yes, but the fixes don't really affect the use cases you'd typically find an 8700k in.

What is the safe overclock with this processor before it becomes unstable?

It entirely depends upon your cooling.  This processor broke the world record over clocking to well over 7 gHz.  With normal air cooling I can push mine to 5 gHz. At 5.1 I have occasional lockups so I stick to 5 gHz.  If you have an ASUS motherboard you can use their automatic overclocking program.  It does a very good job of adjusting all parameters and getting you to just about your maximum stable clock rate.

I ordered this processor 10/5 3:30 am MST when it was backordered and told estimated shipping was 15-20 days. I was notified 10/18 4:30pm MST it would be shipping shortly.
