UPDATE THE FIRMWARE FIRST!
Pros: Awesome, fast, reliable drive.
Cons: Firmware must be updated or you will regret it.
Overall Review: I learned from my first one of these I installed it and it was going quite slow. After just a couple weeks of use, SMART showed 87% life left! After doing the firmware update, it went at normal fast speed, and usage acts normal now. Whatever happened with the original firmware, it destroyed a good chunk of usable life. I didnt bother trying to get a warranty replacement only because its impossible to prove all the writing wasnt from me. But, cheap enough anyway. I mean, $50 drive and losing 10%, I lost $5 on the matter. Exchanging it is not worth the headache.
Steer clear!
Pros: It functions, but thats it (see the rest)
Cons: No side clearance (if you case has physical supports between 5.25 half-height bays, this will NOT fit), eject springs too tight (it threw a drive out and across the floor), super cheap bay door locks (#2 wont even close without tape), not easy to lock drives in place
Overall Review: First, I had to bend the 5.25 half-height bay support tabs for this to fit in. After, it was difficult to get the drive doors to close and actually lock the drive in. Locks with vents do not stay in place, so the only cooling is on half the drives. The eject springs are so tight, when I opened one, it threw the drive on the floor. Bay #2 wont even close and stay closed because of the incredibly cheap locking mechanism they use. I had to take mine apart to remove the ejection springs, just to keep the drive in place. The return mechanism they use is so cheap and weak, my snapped on the first eject with drive #3 (when the eject spring was still in). Depending on the drive you have DO expect external physical damage from the spring! Lastly, once you get over all of that, the cooling fans will let you know its on, because those are some incredibly loud fans for being so tiny!
Sweet Case!
Pros: Nice looks, easy to work on inside
Cons: Has physical support for 5.25 devices, so a traditional full height (or double height today) devices cant fit without bending the tabs
Overall Review: Its a great case and incredibly durable! I know this because it looks like UPS drop-kicked it all the way to my house. Im waiting to hear back so I can get a replacement face cover (the only damage) but Im shocked at how in tact it is enough for me to accept and use it.
ONLY Trust WD!
Pros: Unsurpassed quality and reliability. Unless reading and writing 24/7 for 10 years straight, you CANNOT kill these things!
Cons: Finally got my first true DOA :(
Overall Review: I trust only WD for all my data storage. I now own 16 of the Ultrastar 18TB Drives. One of them (about year ago) occasionally shows SMART data with a Raw Read Error at 64,000, then resets to zero, and has NEVER had a quality of data issue. One I just received today was fully DOA. Windows Disk Manager crashes, Task Manager shows no data but stuck at 100% utilization, my NAS wont boot with it, if added after boot it shows SMART as healthy but with a note Failed, CRC error. First power up, VERY LOUD clicking and snapping noise for about 45 seconds, then stuck in a reboot loop with the click of death. Thats the ONLY reason I gave 4/5 eggs. Had I not gotten a DOA, it would be 5/5. Disappointing after dropping $3,000 for a NAS upgrade and an extra $70 in rush shipping and processing which is now useless and the return isnt rushed. But, top quality equipment isnt going to easily be found at your local Best Buy, so it is what it is. Its just very disappointing to get all excited with it and then cannot even bother for another week or two.
Excellent and fast drive!
Pros: Hard working, reliable, safe, and fast HDDs with massive capacity.
Cons: As with all Ultrastar HDDs, they run HOT! Be sure to have ample cooling, especially if running them in a hard setting (which is why you buy this model).
Overall Review: Exactly what youd expect from the next generation of Ultrastar. Ultrastar is a very unique drive, with quarks that take some getting used to. Id recommend getting to know them before blindly reviewing based on a first-time experience.
Works Great - Really Ugly!
Pros: It works as expected and designed. Even running at top speed with 3 Ultrastar 18TBs, none of them ever went above 40C.
Cons: Tray-less design results in incompatibility with 2.5 drives. Also, incredibly ugly! The pictures dont show it well, but the face is recessed about an inch (maybe a little more).
Overall Review: If you need to frequently swap out 3.5 drives and aesthetics are of no concern, this is the device for you. Giving 5 star because, even though it is the ugliest thing ever, the description was accurate, it never said it can do a 2.5, and the pics are not deceptive (its just hard to visualize in a pic).
