Hitachi GST XL Desk 1TB USB 2.0 3.5" External Hard Drive HXSDNB10001BBB (0S02484)

Pros: For the price, this external hard drive is hard to beat. I hooked it up to an available USB port on my homemade NAS system (FreeNAS OS). Being that this is a "green" drive, my usage is geared more towards long-term storage.

Cons: Slow write speeds. I knew this going into this purchase, though, so no loss of eggs.

Overall Review: Overall, this is a good drive for the price.

Pros: plenty of space, very fast transfer

Cons: didn't like the stand tips over to easily light kept on flickering and after 2 weeks of owning started making a clicking sound and no longer worked

Pros: Of many years of using various 1TB external and internal drives, Hitachi has been the best priced of the 7200rpm drives and no failures to date. These are drives that I run 24/7 over a period of at least 6 months each (archived after they are full).

Cons: Bulky plug, takes up too much space on a surge protector. I guess most externals that need to be plugged in do.

Overall Review: I have had good luck with pretty much all my external and internal 1TB hard drives, Western Digital seems a little slow (5400rpm), and Samsung is more expensive for the same speed. I have yet to have a 1TB external fail, however, I think my Samsung is going to die as it clicks every so often.

Pros: It has been good to me. Easy set up, Easy usage, Easy transfers. Haven't really had any problems with it except the little stand it comes with the little pegs broke, so I just can't move it that much. I've even dropped the thing and nothing went wrong with it.

Cons: The stand is cheap. My wire set up is a little strange so my External is backwards and the wires are in my way sometimes.

Pros: Picked up 2 of these for backups for my partner's Mac and my own. Dead simple to format and get running. They power themselves down when they're not in use. They also seem to run cool.

Cons: The stand is a bit flimsy, but I've never had a problem with them falling over.

Pros: 1 TB is a large amount of space. Seems to be reliable. I like the look of the case.

Cons: Once the drive enters it's powersave mode it can take 5-15 seconds for the drive to spin up after you issue a mount command. But this really isn't a large problem. (At least for my use)

Overall Review: I bought the drive to supplement my aging tape based backup system on my personal workstation. For this purpose it works well. I'm probably averaging ~375 GB of writes per week and no issues yet.

Pros: Quiet Fast Price (49.99) Hooked up with zero problems. Working great so far, if that changes I will add another post. Stand comes off easily for portability. Goes to sleep nicely my Seagate will come on randomly so I have to unplug it.

Cons: Very short usb (3ft) most externals come with at least 4ft or longer. Pretty much need the stand but even though it looks flimsy it is very steady, still would have preferred not to use it.

Overall Review: Lives up to the Hitachi name. I now own four internals and an external and have had 100% satisfaction. The short usb cord lost an egg for this product. I consider that a major oversight on the part of Hitachi.
