If I want to hookup a laptop with two monitors being used as extended desktops, do I need a docking station with 2 display ports like this one? Or would I be okay to buy the cheaper docking station with one display port and use an adapter (assuming one exists)?

This is what we use for our CAD Laptops.  Capabilities depends on your Laptop's Video Card.  The Video Card and Drivers map the displays to the monitors.  This Dock provides the most options out of the box.  This allows for 2 DVI and 1 VGA monitor to be added to your Laptop display - I have tested it with my EliteBook 8770w-Quadro3000M and had 4 separate (Extended) displays (included my Laptop Display) in Windows 7 .  The standard Docking Station 1 DVI and 1 VGA will run 3 (included my Laptop Display).  Be sure your Laptop Docks with this HP Standard.  The next generation of Laptops (ultra-thin) appear to be going to a new side dock.  We have roughly two dozen of these Advanced models, and a half dozen Standard models with both EliteBooks and ProBooks of Various models.  Even with 2 new zBooks we have that just came out.

Question 2

What is the speed of the network? Everywhere I look it just says "RJ45 port". Gigabit is a must have.

The unit has an RJ45 port to plug a Cat5 cable into if you have a hard-wired network. We prefer to use hard wire into the docking station rather than wireless into the laptop itself. Network speed would be whatever your home or office have available. The RJ45 port lets you hard wire to the docking station. BTW, we are very very pleased with the unit.

I don't know the answer, since I started out looking for a docking station for my "HP Elite 8570W" computer, and this is the one that came up. I can say, though, that it is a marvelous docking station.
