iOS 8: The Biggest iOS Release Ever

It’s finally here.

The “biggest iOS release ever” was made public yesterday along with the newly-designed iPhone 6. Those of you who aren’t upgrading your device are downloading the new operating system and the reviews are quickly starting to roll in. But if you’re one of the few who haven’t hit the ‘download and install’ button yet, there may be some reasons to wait.

Despite promising major updates to popular applications like Messages, Photos, and Mail, Apple has been met with criticism because there are still a lot of bugs to be worked out. Among the complaints many iOS 8 users are reporting are bloated software, battery drain, and lack of compatibility with other applications.

Whether you’re a long-time iPhone user or an Android convert, there are many recurring complaints I have seen around the web. Here are five articles about them that you should read before deciding to upgrade to iOS 8.

What People are Saying About iOS 8

1. iOS 8 Takes Up Too Much Storage

Apple launched iOS 8 yesterday – the latest version of its mobile operating system that offers a bunch of new features – but the company has been hit by complaints that the 1.1GB download needs nearly 6GB of free space to install. So how can you fix this? Well, there’s two main options: one is to make space on your device by deleting data or shifting it to the cloud, and the second is to download the update on iTunes and install it via your computer…

2. iOS 8 Doesn’t Work With Dropbox

According to Dropbox, its service has an unfortunate compatibility issue with Apple’s latest mobile platform that specifically affects the Automatic Backup function. The new software apparently prevents both Dropbox and its photo managing app Carousel from properly uploading photos and videos to the cloud. The company says it’s working with Apple to resolve the issue, but for now, it advises those who choose to upgrade their software to refrain from deleting their files until it issues a fix…

3. iOS 8 Will Ruin Your iPhone 4

If you have an iPhone 4, you may be feeling kind of down, because today your phone becomes obsolete. It can’t handle running the new operating system, full stop. But if you have an iPhone 4S, you may be feeling pretty pleased. Your handset looks like a 4, but has Siri, a better camera, and the ability to upgrade and stay with the operating system pack. Apple says that the 4S is good to go and has even updated the 4S landing page to say that its standard operating system is iOS 8.But don’t listen. I repeat: Wall yourself off from this madness. Your mission is to ignore…

4. iOS 8 Drains the Battery Too Fast

Despite improved battery life on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, there are still apps that will run in the background and unnecessarily drain your reserves. Anecdotally, users of earlier models have complained about their battery draining noticeably faster after they installed iOS 8…

5. iOS 8 is Not Private Enough

The minute you download and install iOS 8, the latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system for iPhone and iPad, you should take note of these privacy steps in order to lock down your device. iOS 8 has a number of new features tied to your location. It also has new privacy settings, allowing users to limit how long data is stored for, such as message expiry features and new private browsing settings. Before you do anything like customizing your phone, loading new apps, or syncing your data for the first time, these first seven settings need to be checked, and if necessary, changed…

Should You Still Upgrade to iOS 8?

These are all serious issues that should be a concern to anyone that is thinking about upgrading to iOS 8. However, it still hasn’t deterred the masses from deciding to upgrade — it also hasn’t stopped Android users from making the switch.

If you’re thinking about taking the plunge into iOS 8 despite all these problems, you should rest assured that Apple developers are already working on fixes. Everything should be working soon, but, as always, there are no guarantees!
