I enjoy  lot of outdoor activities, and sometimes these are great opportunities to capture footage to re-live the experience later. I have had an action camera before, and they are pretty cool little devices for having a lot of fun. I think the main attraction for me is how portable they are without worrying about damage quite as much as you would with a more expensive DSLR. I recently heard about Veho, a company from the UK that has been producing high quality action cameras in an attempt to steal the throne from GoPro, and they piqued my interest.

After checking into them a bit I managed to get ahold of their latest 4K model that was just released this month, the Muvi K2 Pro. This new creation is a step up over their previous pack-leader (the Muvi K2 NPNG), with 4K recording and an upgrade from the XA-7 Achilles chipset to the XA-9 Hercules to amp up the performance. Their goal with this model was to take on GoPro’s Hero 4 Silver- but at a more affordable price point ($249.95).

Since there is not a ton of 4K content out right now, a great way to enjoy the UHD capabilities of your TVs and monitors is by creating your own. There are a few different action cams out on the market, and this one by Veho is their 5th iteration of the Muvi K Series, which is designed to be more rugged and have more features than the other lines. One of the features that is present in all cameras from the Muvi K Series is the Android and iOS Veho app, which essentially turns your smart phone into a remote to control all the camera functions for up to 60 meters via Wi-Fi. The popularity of their Muvi K Series has been steadily growing over the past seven years and picking up steam here in America, where there is a large demand for action cameras that can go anywhere, and put the power of capturing professional quality video and images in the hands of the outdoor enthusiast.

In action

Putting this camera through its paces I really got a feel for what Veho was going for. It is pretty easy to navigate through the functions, and the build quality is definitely what you would want from an action camera- it feels sturdy and substantial in your hands. There was an interface point that I think could be slightly improved in that the menu access is limited to the touchscreen (which doesn’t work with a waterproof case), however other than that I think this camera is very user-friendly.

I found that the image quality was excellent, exactly what you would expect from a 4K camera. One of the things that I really liked was that this camera has 10x zoom capabilities, which is not common in other action cameras. It helps to broaden the use, and is a pretty cool touch. Veho has a mountain of different accessories and mounts to help you capture footage anywhere, even 100 meters under the ocean with their beefed-up waterproof diving case.

As action cameras go I found that this was very versatile; the 180° rollover recording allows you to mount the camera upside down if you have limited space and still have your video appear right-side-up when you import/view it. The LCD touchscreen backpack is also removable, if you really want something to fit in a tight space or want to reduce the weight, which can definitely come in handy for long recording sessions.

All-in-all I think that what Veho has done here is really cool; they have taken a stab at producing a rugged, user-friendly, 4K action camera – and succeeded. This model definitely puts them in the limelight for the adventurous crowd looking to get the most from their escapades with top-notch quality without maxing out the budget.
