Strong solid workhorse

Pros: My 3rd NUC and no disappointment in this unit. Using it for my office workhorse 8-10 hours per day and no issues ... barely kicks the fan up when loading a serious Power Pivot Excel file. Driving 2 - 27" monitors @ 2560 x 1440 and only wish I could get a 3rd hooked up.

Cons: Maybe another USB or 2 but that's why they make those hubs I guess.

Other Thoughts: Windows 10 64 bit with no issues. You really don't need to update the BIOS ... everything worked on mine before and after the update so save yourself the worry.

Happy so far

Pros: - Ubuntu 18.04 installed w/o any problems.
- easy to install memory and system disk. Everything fits together precisely and the case feels like it is sturdy and well-made.
- This is a smallish thing, but I like that the power indicator light isn't obtrusive. I actually think you can configure the color in the BIOS setup (not sure). By default it is blue when up and running, and sort of an orange color when suspended.

Cons: - Out of the box, fan noise was intrusive. There is an auto-fanless mode, and the temperature was apparently just at the threshold, because the fan kept switching off and on again, starting up at a pretty high speed and producing an annoying intermittent whiny sound. In the BIOS setup (very nice BTW), I monkeyed w/ the fan parameters and got the fan speed to behave more linearly, which is *way* less annoying, and doesn't seem to significantly compromise the internal temperatures, .
- Not enough USB ports. But there's only so many you can fit in such a small box. And this is easy to work around w/ a hub. I also don't like that the audio output port is on the front.

Other Thoughts: This product isn't blazingly fast, but I didn't really expect it to be. I plan to use it as a general-purpose desktop in my home that should be a moderate upgrade and much lower in energy (and space) usage compared to the big tower w/ 95W processor it will replace. I haven't really had too much time to judge how I like it in real use. For example my kids have not told me how it does w/ steam games and Minecraft. I did notice what seemed like an odd stuttering the first time I connected to it with ssh, but haven't really noticed anything like that since (could have been at the client end I suppose). I have it configured w/ 16GB of (Crucial?) RAM and a Samsung 860 EVO SSD. I like the energy efficiency, but the small form factor does lead to some compromises, like a limited number of external ports.

USB external drive disconnects

Pros: I bought the i5 version because people mentioned the fan of i7 is much louder. It is still very fast for a HTPC. The size is small. The TDP is only 15W.

Cons: One of the main reasons I bought this is build my own NAS. I attached an external USB drive to it. However all 4 USB ports have disconnection issues. The external USB drive initially works fine but disappears after some time. The device manager shows exclamation mark on USB Massive Storage Device. I Googled it and it seems to be a common issue. I went to Power Options->Change advanced power settings->USB settings->USB selective suspend setting, and changed the setting to disabled. It does seems to solve the issue on the yellow USB port. But it still doesn't work for the other 3 ports. And since the yellow port is in the front, attaching an external USB drive to it is ugly.

Perfect mini-ESXi box

Pros: - Small and quiet
- 32GB of RAM
- Can fit two drives (1xm.2 form factor and 1x2.5 inch) simultaneously!
- Everything works for ESXi 6.5u1 out of the box!

Cons: - I'll always want more ram in any box...32GB works well, but 64GB would have been ideal.
- Single NIC...2 NICs would have been great for redundancy and flexibility

Other Thoughts: This is the perfect little ESXi box. It's small, can be placed anywhere, and has a ton of features (many of which I'll never use but it's still cool to have them available in case of future use cases).

My "cons" are merely wishlist items and I'm aware that it may not be feasible to cram all that in. This thing is truly tiny!

That said, it's been a perfect augmentation to my first ESXi box (a whitebox built years ago) and provides plenty of processing and RAM for my homelab needs with easy expansion with more. This is a good value.

Everything I expected and more ...

Pros: Setup is a snap
Updating BIOS (UEFI) is easy
More powerful than I thought it would be
Runs Windows 10 with ease

Cons: Won't make me a bacon, lettuce & tomato sandwich.

Other Thoughts: I highly advise anyone contemplating getting one of these to thoroughly read Intel's Support pages for this model.
Don't expect it to do things it was not designed to do, like run Windows 7.
Set up your drives as GPT partitioned and install Windows 10 in UEFI mode.
This is state of the art equipment (7th Generation) and putting an older OS on it is like putting used oil into your brand new car -- you're inviting problems.

This NUC replaced a full size desktop that had a 51-watt full desktop CPU (Core i3-6100) and this little gem gives me a higher Passmark score than the desktop did and this NUC's CPU only draws 15 watts! Pretty amazing! I didn't think the "U" class CPUs (designed for laptops) had the power that the 7th Generation chips apparently do.

I'd been thinking of getting one of these for a long time and then I saw Newegg offering a free 4GB RAM stick with it... well, that worked. I bought an identical 4GB stick to go with it and a 250GB Samsung 850 EVO M.2 SSD. I had an old 480GB Samsung 843 Server Class SSD laying around and put that in the 2.5" bay.

1st step: update the BIOS. Download the .bio file from Intel and put it on a flash drive. Put the drive in the USB port and turn on the NUC and press F7 while it attempts to boot. Direct the update program to the file on the drive and wait for it to finish --
that's pretty much it. Now you can install Windows and load up the drivers you downloaded from Intel's website.
Start with Chipset, then Graphics, Wireless, LAN, Audio, then the others (card reader, thunderbolt, etc.).
I ordered a USB-C to Displayport cable to use with another monitor I have that does not have an HDMI port. Startech makes a good one and Newegg has it.

Like many others, I did not like Windows 10 when it first appeared. But after using it now for almost 2 years, I'm a convert. Windows 7 now seems clunky and stupid to me and 8 was just a mistake, like Vista. But 10 is continuing to improve with each update and keep in mind that this NUC was designed with Windows 10 in mind.

I've heard Linux runs well on it -- at some point I may put Linux Mint or Ubuntu on it once the developers come up with the right drivers for all the components in this system (and that could take a year or longer).

After installing your OS be sure to run Windows update to get the latest fixes, security patches, features, etc.

I really think the days of the "big box" computer are numbered. All you really need is one of these or a similar small computer. With the Thunderbolt port on the i5 and i7 NUCs you can attach an external GPU for gaming -- like the Razer Core or something like it.

In summary, I'm very happy with this product and I have a lot more space in my tiny apartment!

Pros: The Kaby Lake i5 Iris Plus model here is much, much faster than the Broadwell i3 version. Incredibly easy UEFI, and really easy to update with a .BIO file on a USB stick - no need for an OS or boot disk. BTW, you should update the UEFI/BIOS soon or you'll be missing out on the cool LED "rectangular ring" on the front (not intrusive, pretty elegant). All 4 USB ports are USB 3.0, and installing Win10 Pro x64 was relatively quick from a USB 3.0 thumbdrive. The yellow port is a charging port. No complaints whatsoever about CPU/GPU speed, memory controller speed, M.2 speed, LAN speed, WiFi speed, USB speed (not tested so far - SATA, Bluetooth, NFC, IR). This is a very snappy unit. I downloaded Intel's NUC driver bundle for Win10 x64 and I've had no driver issues - no yellow exclamation marks in Device Manager.

Cons: Fan on this model is louder than on the Broadwell i3 model. Even though both CPU/GPU packages are technically 15W, this one with 3.4 GHz turbo and Iris Plus graphics (with 64 MB eDRAM) is dissipating a lot more heat. During subsequent day-to-day usage, the fan is usually not so noticeable, but during initial OS and app installs, it was very noticeable.

Display outputs caught me off-guard coming from a Broadwell NUC, although this is not necessarily a con. Rather than mini-HDMI and mini-DisplayPort, we now have a full-sized HDMI and a USB Type-C/Thunderbolt 3 output. StarTech has an adapter for this (to HDMI) on the Jungle site that works fine, for about $30.

Other Thoughts: SSD used: SAMSUNG 960 EVO M.2 250GB NVMe PCI-Express 3.0 x4 Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-V6E250BW
RAM used: Crucial 16GB (2 x 8G) 260-Pin DDR4 SO-DIMM DDR4 2133 (PC4 17000) Laptop Memory Model CT2K8G4SFD8213

I highly recommend this model if you're looking for a new NUC. The i5, with its turbo unlocked, and the Iris Plus graphics, with its eDRAM, make a pretty formidable 15W APU. It is indeed mich faster than the i3 model for desktop usage. We are using this as an office productivity PC with dual 1080p monitors. This taller model with an extra SATA drive bay in addition to the M.2 port could be very useful for future expansion or uses. I've used my previous Broadwell i3 NUC for probably 10 different tasks in 2.5 years (including BlueIris camera monitor station/NVR), so the extra storage ability can come in handy down the road.

Other Thoughts: I would definitely recommend this product!
