Hot Little Computer 4/11/2018 3:55:30 PM

Pros: Size & Connections

Cons: As with other reviews, the computer is noisy and though Intel shows it as a HTPC it would not work that close to a TV. The unit that was delivered to me, when running the fan sounded like the bearings had failed, that is a metal on metal squealing type of noise. The reason for this, Intel has the processor running at 70 degrees at idle and the fan was running at 4000 rpm. In researching what could be done to alleviate the noise, everything that I could find indicated that the fan noise could be reduced somewhat by a BIOS update but it would not be a significant reduction. I have returned the unit and it will be interesting to see if the fan was defective or is this a design flaw of this model of NUC.

Overall Review: What should concern anyone interested in this computer is how hot the unit runs. Intel claims that is "Optane" ready . . . According to Intel the 32gig Optane module max temp is 70 degrees, which is in line with most M.2 PCIe modules. Once the NUC starts working what will the CPU temp go to and how much of that heat will be transferred to the memory, SSD/HDD . . . It is for this issue I am giving this NUC 1egg and a recommendation of DO NOT PURCHASE

Follow Up: Received a replacement for the defective unit; Installed 32gig Optane memory along with a WD 1tb hard drive . . . The Optane memory does work as advertised, the NUC booted and ran programs with what appeared to be identical load and performance speeds of an M.2 SSD.

Now on to what I had feared: Loaded Make MKV and Handbrake and proceeded to rip a blu ray movie. The NUC performed well during the Make MKV rip, however, converting the MKV file to mp4 with Handbrake, as expected the NUC i7 cpu temperature quickly ran up to 100c and fluctuated between 97 and 100 degrees for over 8 minutes and the temperature of the Optane memory HDD was approaching 80 degrees.

Contacted Intel about the over-heating, they suggested that I update the BIOS . . . I informed them that had already been done at which time they offered to send a new unit but a cash refund was not possible.

I am out $500 because Intel has designed a computer that will not perform as advertised and is unwilling to stand behind the product . . . Again DO NOT PURCHASE

Snap to put together 9/20/2017 5:49:13 PM

Pros: Core i7 Processor
Easy to assemble

Cons: The cooling fan is audible

Overall Review: I think it took me less than 20 minutes to assemble this PC. I installed 8GB of Crucial RAM (CT2K4G4SFS8213), a 500GB Samsung 850 EVO M.2 2280 SSD (MZ-N5E500BW), and a 1TB 5400RPM HDD, then installed Win10 Pro via USB thumb drive. Everything went flawlessly. As others have noticed, the cooling fan is audible, but this PC is certainly more quiet than the last gaming rig I built, and I'm not having any of the heat issues some folks have reported. Really slick.

Works with ubuntu 7.04 out of the box. 8/12/2017 3:20:28 PM

Pros: 1. Takes 2.5" ssd, I put m500 960gb from crucial.
2. Nice single or dual core performance and Kabylake graphics.
3. Cool small PC with decent power.
4. Has SSD and M2 mounting screws in the box.

Cons: It would be nice to have option for AC cord. Current configuration has AC plug right on the adapter and requires some space on AC bar.

Overall Review: I do not think fan is loud. Running it 100% on one core right now and fan did not even increase rpm.
I did get new BIOS on it right away (v49).
Received it next day! Good job, Newegg!

Size matters 8/4/2017 10:08:52 AM

Pros: The NUC is all about size, it's very small, and that dictates everything about it. Because it's small it has to use a low power CPU because there is no room for a big heatsink to cool a desktop CPU. The CPU in the NUC has two cores, vs four on a desktop Kaby Lake iCore7. For desktop usage that's not a problem, running browsers, mail clients and other simple desktop applications, the performance of the iCore7 NUC is excellent. However it's not suitable for compute intensive tasks. I ran a large Quartus build (Quartus is a program that is used to generate code for Intel Field Programmmable Gate Arrays). I did the identical run on a desktop Kaby Lake i7-7700K 4.2GHz system and the NUC with an i7-7567U 3.5GHz CPU. On the NUC system I did a run with a 2G 5400RPM drive and with a Samsung 960 SSD. The results are below

NUC with hard disk
Info: Elapsed time: 02:03:56
Info: Total CPU time (on all processors): 02:58:42

NUC with SSD
Info: Elapsed time: 01:55:46
Info: Total CPU time (on all processors): 02:49:50

Desktop Kaby Lake
Info: Elapsed time: 01:16:51
Info: Total CPU time (on all processors): 02:23:39

As you can see the desktop system completed the task significantly faster, 1 hour and 17 minutes vs 1 hour and 56 minutes on the NUC with an SSD and 2 hours and 4 minutes in the NUC with a hard disk. Quartus is a parallel application so it can take advantage of multiple cores, in addition the CPU in the NUC runs at 3.5GHz vs 4.2GHz for the desktop system, this is what accounts for the longer run time of the NUC. Desktop applications are mostly single threaded, i.e. they use a single core, so the performance difference will be much less dramatic.

The i7-7567U CPU in the NUC has Intel's latest graphics processor. It's fully 4K capable. I connected both a 4K monitor and a 1080P monitor and it was able to handle them both simultaneously.

The NUC has built in WIFI and bluetooth which are both Linux compatible, I initially installed Fedora 25 and then upgraded to Fedora 26, both fully supported the builtin WiFI and bluetooth.

There is one 2.5" hard drive slot and one M.2 22x42/80 slot for a PCIe SSD. I installed both a Seagate 2T harddrive and a Samsung 960 1T SSD. For desktop usage the SSD makes a world of difference, applicaitons open instantly with the SSD, there is noticible lag with the hard drive.

Linux compatible. I'm running Fedora 26 and everything works. I don't know if Redhat Enterprise Linux 6 or 7 will run, I suspect that they won't, but any leading edge distribution such as Fedora or Ubuntu should be fine.

It comes with a VESA mounting plate so that the NUC can me attached to the back of a monitor.

Cons: The NUC has only one USB-C socket which also serves as the Displayport connector. If you use a USB-C to Displayport cable to connect your monitor you are left without a USB-C which is a serious deficiency if you are planning to use an external harddisk. I have an 8TB Seagate external drive which I wanted to use with the NUC, the drive requires USB-C, a USB-A to USB-C cable doesn't work because of the power limitations of USB-A. I did test that the drive works with the NUC's USB-C, it does. I've ordered an HDMI to Displayport cable which hopefully will free up the USB-C port for use with the drive.

The 2.5" bay is only 9.5mm which restricts the NUC to 2TB hard drives, a 15mm bay would support 4TB drives. By eye I suspect that a 15mm drive would fit but I can't say for sure, the spec says 9.5.

Overall Review: I'm using the following components in the NUC,

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 32GB (2 x 16G) 260-Pin DDR4 SO-DIMM DDR4 2133 (PC4 17000) Laptop Memory Model F4-2133C15D-32GRS
Seagate 2TB BarraCuda 5400 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Laptop Internal Hard Drive ST2000LM015
SAMSUNG 960 EVO M.2 1TB NVMe PCI-Express 3.0 x4 Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-V6E1T0BW

Excellent "Hidden" Computer 7/30/2017 6:35:00 PM

Pros: Customization. I love the fact that I can put up to 32GB's of RAM into this (and I did). I also love that I was able to put a 2.5" SSD into this tiny beast along with (if I wanted to) a M.2 SSD.
FAST! This processor is awesome. I love the i7.

Cons: Runs a little warm but I haven't had issues with it. I did run into some issues upon my first boot-up where it would freeze up on the boot screen. After I had updated the BIOS I didn't have this issue anymore. Fans sound is noticeable when it's running hot.
I haven't been able to find many uses for the Thunderbolt 3 yet (such as external graphics).

Overall Review: I would recommend this product for anyone that wants to have a computer that is VERY easily hidden from view. I have mine attached under a desk using wood screws about the same size as the ones that came with the computer for attaching to the monitor. All I did was use the mount that came with it and mounted it with the wood screws. Very easy to detach from the mount by just sliding the computer up and off the mount. I haven't been able to utilize the 4k ability yet as I currently do not own any 4k tv's or monitors (stressing yet). I installed Windows 10 Professional on my little machine as I do with all the machines I own.

Best PC for home and work 5/16/2017 9:23:56 AM

Pros: I am a MAC user, bought this NUC to run some of my windows apps.
This is a quite and very powerfull PC in small form factor.Far better then the Apple Mac mini.
The thunderbolt 3 port support LG ultrafine 5k monitor in 4K resolution (due to windows limitation).
The sound (microphone and speaker) and camera works great for skype videoconferencing.
The apple magic keyboard and mouse works flawlessly (needed the boot camp driver for the touch gestures).
Also works great with Logitech k811
This is the best $500 I have spent for a technology product so far (don't know how long it will last)

Cons: Windows 10 does not have all the drivers. Needed updated intel drivers
Intel driver update utility - is of limited help. Although It help to identify the correct drivers. It often fails to update the drivers (e.g. video, thunderbolt. Chipset etc). Had to update some of the driver manually.

Overall Review: Yes, I would recommend it to others
I wish, it supported Mac OS.

Mixed Feeling 5/13/2017 10:02:28 AM

Pros: Hardware is nice.

Cons: Forced to use Windows 10

Overall Review: Overall the hardware is nice, but being forced to use Windows 10 means this generation of NUC gets 1 egg only. I bought this as soon as it was released assuming that Intel would support Windows 7. Intel has been good in the past with supporting business, but no longer. The NUC7 graphics drivers will not install in Windows 7, meaning a HD movie will play, but uses 50-75% of the CPU time. Stick with the NUC6 generation if you plan to use Windows 7.

Good hardware crippled by some shady decisions by upper management.

Awesome little box 4/27/2017 9:53:42 AM

Pros: -Fast
-Quiet
-Nice BIOS with control over front LEDs

Cons: -I'd prefer and audio jack in the rear for speaker setup

Overall Review: Awesome little workstation. Running Arch Linux and everything works great. Really tried to push it but I've had a hard time even getting the fan to kick on. Not sure how it will respond with Windows, but Linux has been great. Using it for development work and I couldn't be happier.
