This machine is great 3/23/2019 9:18:24 PM

Pros: small form factor.
low power draw.
powerful cpu
radeon vega integrated graphics
playes games on high settings
playees 4k videos with only 20% cpu usage.

Cons: none

Overall Review: this machine is great for alot of things. Im currently using it as a game server and am hosting a couple of games at once. the thermal performance is stellar for this purpose and the stock cooler surprisingly keeps up under this specifc use case. I can also play league of legends and overwatch without problems on high settings and never hear the computer at all. Ill have to test more things and games in the future but overall, For what I use it for, it's amazing.

Who is this actually FOR? Price is the only real reason vs a laptop. 1/12/2019 11:28:25 AM

Pros: -For running VR, it actually works great. My Oculus setup runs almost as well as my i7 6700k, 1070 FTW, 16GB ddr4 system with only one 8 gig stick of Corsair ram in this NUC. I would wager it's like a GTX1060 desktop or 1060TI laptop. PERFECT for beatsaber and most any VR game worth playing for more than an hour or two.
-Very quiet IMO, even when using max-cooling mode
-BIOS is wonderful to work with
-IO offered on this baby is far more than my desktop and any laptop around
-Feels SUPER solid. Extremely tiny.
-Great sound quality
-Don't have to fiddle with it at all to use normally.
-Using it remotely is a dream- just plug power in and hit the button. You would need to know how to set it up properly though.

Cons: -Powerbrick is about the same size but half the height of the NUC itself. Both are heavier than I expected as well, and it ends up being like carrying around a fat laptop but without a keyboard or screen.
-Optical audio is seemingly non-standard. It's embedded in the 3.5mm jack somehow.
-requires a hex key (in box) to open, minor gripe
-Internal lid seems to press pretty hard on the NVME drives, even with the gel pad
-2xHDMI makes this better for VR, but sacrifices full size DisplayPort for them.
-To compare this to a laptop, you would get: 16GB ddr4 ram (80$), NVME SSD (100-200$), DP adapters or a lightening hub (15-60$), wireless keyboard with trackpad or mouse (25$), and maybe a USB portable monitor (100$+, not gaming grade)
-Price leaves you wondering if you were better off with a laptop unless it's on heavy discount

Overall Review: I think this device is super unique, but who is it for? It ends up being quite an expensive device, so in what circumstance would I maybe suggest it?
-You play VR often, or have multiple-monitor setups, that make use of the crazy IO. Laptops lack this.
-You don't need to carry it with you EVERY day, just sometimes, like having an office and your home.
-You already have full setups in the locations you are planning on using this for, and a laptop is unnecessary.
-You want a powerful home-media server, or home game-streaming setup, that you leave around your house.
-You want to have a portable server with some OOMPH to it, and use your everyday ultrabook to remote in to the NUC without a monitor.

I think it's rare that you would find yourself wishing you had this over a really high quality laptop.
What makes you buy this NUC over a laptop is then, in my opinion, the tradeoff for price and performance. You are going to be trading the actual portable usability of a laptop for increased IO, performance, and smaller on-desk size. At the current barebone price of 890$, you get about the same results performance wise from some laptops for about the same price when it's all said and done.

I bought an SSD+8gbRAM bundle for less than 890$, (the current price of the barebone system), and I think it's worth keeping. But if It wasn't bundled at that price, I probably would have jumped on a laptop like the Overpower 15" or 17" and been a little happier with the purchase.

Great product, but abysmal software package 12/28/2018 1:18:58 PM

Pros: Compact VR computer, super portable
Intel software package comes with approximately 2 worthwhile steam keys
Full computer is roughly the size of an external hardrive
Haven't had issues with overheating and was able to run my full VR library without major drops in performance

Cons: Need to purchase RAM and SSD to have a functional computer
Software package is full of garbage bloatware/free trials
Can't be upgraded

Overall Review: I have two of these wonderful little computers and currently have them mounted to the back of 32" TV's for a portable VR station. The computers work great, once you have all of the components purchased. Definitely a bit expensive for what they are, essentially a laptop in desktop form. I downloaded all of the software that looked interesting on the first NUC, but the second one came with an invalid key. If the software package had come with anything worthwhile, I would have been fairly upset. But alas, it was too much hassle working with the support at Intel to secure a few Steam keys and a bunch of garbage. And to think, a single Windows key would have been infinitely more useful than all of the "hundreds of dollars" worth of Intel software...

Great Product - Terrible Support by Intel 11/19/2018 4:46:37 PM

Pros: I love the system, fast as get all. I am very happy with the hardware, no issues at all

Cons: Intel Support SUCKS. When I go to download the software bundle from Intel the key provided does not work (The key is the system serial number) When I open a support ticket they refuse to resolve the issue saying they need a screenshot of the system serial number, invoice and a copy of the master key provided with the system. I give them everything I have (I scanned the serial number from the box with the serial number on it, I also scanned the insert telling me where to download the software and to use the system serial number. Now they do not even respond. If I would have known that Intel was going to treat a paying customer this way I probably would have purchased something else (Part of the reason I purchased this system was the software bundle).

Overall Review: No I do not recommend this item until Intel gets its support up to speed and treats the customers properly. If they decide to resolve the issues satisfactorily and may boost my rating

Smokin fast! 11/14/2018 4:08:07 PM

Pros: core i8 with the integrated amd gpu makes this thing sing, with a 4k monitor watching 4k hdr videos on youtube the gpu only uses about 20%. I paired this build with a samsung evo 1 tb 970 and WOW this thing sings! I also paired it with 16gb of ram.
I also bought a sonnet 10Gbe thunderbolt 3 adapter to pair with my network and bang! 1.15 GBE a second, no problem fully maxed out. Also you will never run out of I/O front and back.

Cons: The audio is sub par, a lot of scratchy sound coming out of my speakers, did all the updates but still their, i used the front 3.5mm jack and audio seams better.

Overall Review: Don't let the size of this thing worry you, its a power house!
Replaced a i7 6700k system with this system and I'm really happy!
This is now my main system and at full power its still quiet.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

Good for low end gaming 10/22/2018 11:10:09 AM

Pros: Good media center but could have done that for much less money.

Cons: - Not as powerful gaming as I had hoped. Not sure I believe the benchmarks out there.
- Struggles to run games on a 50in+ TV but does okay on 60HZ monitor.

Overall Review: Edit: After a couple months of use now having issues with HDMI display. Upon boot and after going to sleep the NUC powers up but the monitor is just black screen. I've tried a few different monitors and cables definitely NUC related. Pretty disappointed overall. Performance and reliability certainly outweigh space saving...

Perfect for 2k gaming 9/4/2018 12:42:22 PM

Pros: - There are setting in the BIOS that lets you disable each and every front facing LED, even the power button LED. This is my favorite feature.
- Perfect for 2k gaming (with Dota 2 settings on high (not ultra) my LG 32" 4k monitor displays 50 fps. If I had a 2k monitor the NUC would probably display 60fps.
- Compact size is excellent
- Lots of USB ports
- Relatively quiet (half as loud as the Gigabyte AORUS Gaming Box GTX 1070 that I had connected to my laptop previously)

Cons: - Good as is but I want more graphics power so I can play Dota 2 at 60fps at 4k. Ideally 120fps :-)
- Good as is but I want more CPU power
- I wish it had two more USB ports (I have a lot of USB peripherals)

Overall Review: - Intel, please make a NUC with even more power!
- Intel, please make an upright model that vents out through the top (like the PS3 when stood on its side).
