Do you need to use thermal paste with this processor?

It comes with its own cooler already. The kraken x62 came with thermal paste preapplied so I just used what came with my water cooler. You will need an AIO if you plan on any level of OC from the bios. Even though this is a non K chip my asus maximus x hero is modifying the blck to 102.50 under TPU II settings and the chip holds 4.6ghz single, 4.4ghz all core. That being said under load I can reach 75-80c for short periods. I recommend an AIO like the kraken and just using their paste.

Does it come with auto matic thermal paste?

Yes, the desktop processor comes with a heatsink and fan and has thermal paste already in place on the heatsink.  You just attach the heatsink/fan to the cpu and then correct the power wire for the fan to the motherboard, and you're ready to go.

I used/tested Crucial DDR4-2666 with a ASRock Z370M Pro4 and a MSI Z370M Mortar motherboards. I don't OC, I build deskside clusters with commodity hardware.

What turbo frequency does this cpu run at with all cores? Can it actually hold 4.6GHz turbo with all 6 cores?

This depends on the motherboard my mobo the Maximus X Hero and has a feature that changes the frequency to maintain the 4.6 turbo. On youtube lookup Jayztwocents look for the video Reviewer caught CHEATING! which outlines the answer to your question perfectly

Is this capable of running an M2 card?

This is more of a motherboard question. The processor has many pcie lanes to run a m2 card, but the motherboard must support it.

Intel specs say the 8700 non-k will support 2666 ram speed . Will that xmp profile be available with a z370 board?

Accepted Answer

2666 RAM speed should be selectable in the BIOS for all Z370 motherboards.  I put a locked (non k) Coffee Lake processor into a new build with a Gigabyte Z370 Aorus Gaming 5 motherboard; default speed on that board was 2133 but selecting 2666 was easy.  Depending on the board, you may need to update the BIOS.

what cooling system would you recommend for Intel i7 8700 8th Gen BX80684I78700?

I am running this on the asrock z370 Tachi with latest bios and no overclocking. Using stock cooler and getting 31C idle windows, 39C in bios, but games and things like Prime 95 quickly bring the CPU to 80 - 100C which I feel is too hot. The processor has a T junction of 100C before it will cycle down the processor to lower temperatures. Looking at AIO coolers at the moment to fix this issue. I used the thermal paste that came with the stock heat sink.

Does the stock cooler have a copper core on this one? I don't have a problem with intel's  stock cooler design, but they need to make the heatsink itself twice as high. fan is good.

No. It's all aluminum. This is not a problem since the processor is 65W and there is no overclocking this. 100% processor usage will not take keep you below 80C with fan running at 2K. This heatsink can't be used on the 8700K. For a more quiet system or if you want to reduce your temperature (life of the processor is probably 10yrs of 100% load and 95C), get an aftermarket cooler with a 4wire fan.
