Super Fast 7/27/2019 3:04:22 AM

Pros: Very fast. I only load my top game and operating system on this. I have a few other programs installed on it, but not many since it's 380gb

Cons: Make sure you motherboard is compatible. "Intel Optane Ready" does not mean it's compatible. The 905p isn't the same exact technology as the previous series. I do know that Asus Maximus XI Extreme is compatible and I also know that Gigabyte Z390 Extreme is not compatible. Also this is very expensive. I bought this because I wanted all the newest technology available. I saved a long time for this new build.

Overall Review: Fastest SSD in the world. I love it.

New technology 5/30/2019 10:14:17 AM

Pros: Works well, no drivers required for I7-7700 and Z170X-Gamiming 7. Boots in just a few seconds (takes longer to get through BIOS than to load Windows 10).

Cons: Wrote a long review on this, Newegg didn't post it.

Overall Review: More write endurance than other SSD (MLC,"TLC" which is really 8-level cell)

Edit 5-30-19:
I see that there may be negative reviews on the M.2 version not supporting PC booting. I am using the AIC (Add-In-Card), PCIe version of this item. I have no experience trying to get a computer to boot from M.2, perhaps this is related. The following Wikipedia page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.2) explains some of the Features of M.2, perhaps there's a configuration option in BIOS to force booting through PCIe on M.2 rather than defaulting to SATA?

I have never seen a manual for a motherboard which clearly defined all the BIOS functions and features, and have spent HOURS fiddling and poking with settings, in order to get a system booting reliably. I even had a motherboard that advertised support for Kaby Lake, but you needed to boot Skylake in order to flash to a new BIOS before Kaby Lake would boot (thanks a lot, G***byte)! I feel sorry for folks who didn't know that, or didn't have an old processor kicking around the junk bin *end of rant*.

Can't use as a boot drive on Gigabyte Aorus Master or Elite z390 Motherboards, causes POST Failure 5/12/2019 12:48:53 AM

Pros: -Potential performance I guess. Despite being labeled as an "SSD", this thing would not work despite multiple configuration attempts.

Cons: -Unfortunately I didn't read the fine print contained in a lone Gigabyte Forums thread warning folks that you can't use optane-based M.2 SSDs as boot devices. Despite being labeled as an "SSD" and multiple people raving how fast this thing functioned as their "boot" drive, I was never able to get this device to work on either an Aorus Master or Elite level motherboard after over a month of trying and RMAs.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE

If you install this drive on any of the m.2 slots on an Aorus Z390 Master/Elite motherboard, your system WILL NOT POST. You'll get Error Code D9 with the error light sitting on the "VGA" status and it will start endlessly boot cycling over and over again. I first thought I had a bad mobo, processor or RAM so I RMA'd everything and tried again, only to be presented with the same error. I only found out about this issue when a friend of mine stumbled across a thread in the gigabyte Z390 forums talking about this exact problem.

Apparently there is something either on Gigabyte's or Intel's end that causes this drive to absolutely wreck their motherboards, despite the Aorus line being declared "Optane ready". Sure, ready for Optane to be used as its original purpose as a hybrid booster, but not as a standalone storage/boot drive. Also this was done with the latest F8E bios that was released less than a month ago and I was still having the same issue. There is nothing in the Aorus manual that warns the user about this issue, and gigabyte's Optane page doesn't even reference the z390 boards, so that potentially might be part of the problem. The tech is just too new, and there's too little documentation about it readily available online.

Either way, it does not appear there is a functional set of configuration settings that will get this drive to function as a boot drive at time of writing this review.

Overall Review: -Wish this had been documented somewhere outside of a gigabyte forum thread. I realize Optane is still fairly new technology but this was an incredibly frustrating experience and because it's such new tech, trying to troubleshoot this issue was extremely difficult. There is no obvious documentation, either on GIgabyte or Intel's page that indicates this kind of problem with Optane based SSDs. Heck, Intel even provides a pdf on how to properly prepare an Optane based SSD for use as a boot device, but it won't work in my setup.

Shoutout to newegg for understanding my issue and assisting me with getting this all sorted out.

Manufacturer Response:
Sorry to hear that you had difficulty in enabling Intel 905P SSD. 905P is a standard NVMe 1.0 device. If the board supports NVMe 1.0, then it should work with 905P. We are always looking at opportunities to improve our support and appreciate the feedback. Magical SSD 4/12/2019 10:19:19 AM

Pros: Fast, consistent, doesn't bog down with mixed reads and writes. Easy to install; I made an Image first, plugged it in and Restored the image. Works perfectly! And did I mention that it is FAST!
Beautiful packaging and a beautiful piece of hardware; Gorgeous!

Cons: No Cons.

Overall Review: Yes, if you have a need for really fast reads and writes using complicated software.

Much Faster Than Sata SSD 2/22/2019 5:30:38 PM

Pros: My first Sata SSD was a lot faster than my HDD. All following SSDs were about the same as the first.
This drive is that much faster. Going from Sata SSD to NVME Optane is like HDD to Sata SSD.
The Samsung Evo Pro is reviewed as faster sequential read/write for things like loading one large file, but the 900P is reviewed as much better for random read/write for copying lots of small files or maybe a large file that is seen as lots of small files.
Watching Windows install was not like watching paint dry. For medium installs like Chrome, there is essentially no wait time. For program loading, the wait is never eternal, even for big ones.
My system boots in 5 seconds with slow boot on. I have gotten in the habit of turning it off when I am not using it.

Cons: There are no cons. Though you could say price is still a bit high. If they lowered the price, wouldn't Samsung then lower their price too? Neither of them would make money, resulting in less R&D money for the next round. So, to me, the price is understandable for bleeding edge.

Overall Review: When the price does eventually come down, I plan on getting whatever Optane drive is available in an m.2 version of around 500 GB to 2 TB.

Super Fast Drive 2/11/2019 3:54:57 PM

Pros: - Super fast drive
- Easily plugs in available PCIEx4 slot
- No power cord or other connectors required
- Newer Gigabyte Motherboard found card and used as Boot Drive without issue

Cons: - Server I tried to install would not use this SSD as the Boot Drive as it was an older server
- a bit expensive per gig but in my opinion worth the investment

Overall Review: Great product. Awesome design and packaging. I like this better than M.2 drives as I have had a few of those fail recently. Highly recommend

Incredible performance in a small package 2/6/2019 9:16:47 PM

Pros: - Small, so you can use one or more in m.2 to pcie adapters.
- Fast. You'd have to know what optane is and it's market.

Cons: - Capacity in this form factor is still small.
- Obviously expensive compared to regular SSDs
- Still energy hungry. Needs good cooling. Not sure about laptop usage.

Overall Review: - I'm hearing that Intel is letting go of Optane. Very sad. Optane was the only tech that tried to bridge high latency non-volative memory and low latency volatile memory and actually sold to consumers too.
