Does this processor come with a fan, or does that need to be purchased separately?

It comes with the standard small intel fan, it's perfectly fine in most normal cases for regular use. You can get a larger cooler if you'd like or are worried about airflow during high performance use.

You can try it with the sock fan and then get a larger fan later if you have heating issues.

Is this compatible with ASUS Z87-Plus motherboard?

It is compatible with an ASUS Z87-Plus motherboard (the one I see is item #N82E16813131980). If you want to check compatibility look for socket type. That processor runs on the LGA 1150 socket which is supported by the board.

any advice for this cpu in a gaming rig and what video card would you pair it with to prevent bootle necking ?

I am not sure I would put this in a gaming rig I was building.  I recently built one with an 3rd gen intel

and yes, it's more expensive, but I won't have to replace this chip for several years. It's got one of the higher ratings on Passmark's benchmark site, and is incredible for gaming.  Best chip I have ever had....my last one was a first generation Core i7....this one is better.

If you do decide to go with this one, I would hit the middle of the road on the GeForce video, about a 650 i  or so.  Geforce makes the best video card chips hands down. Never been much of an ATI fan......Good luck with your build.
