Does this device connect via USB or 10 base T?

Neither. This is not a NAS, it is a drive enclosure. All 4 drives connect via SATA directly to the motherboard inside a PC. You install this enclosure in 3 consecutive 5.25 drive slots. You can access the 4 hot swap drive trays from the front of the PC. Nothing uses 10baseT by default anymore. If you are still running a 10baseT network, its time to upgrade that before you go looking for a NAS.

can this fit 2.5 ssd?

I didn't tried; you will need an 2.5" to 3.5" adapter on each, but alignment in the cage backplate might be a problem and you don't want to messup with the HDD connectors...
These are better options for 2.5" HDD; I'm using a 4x2.5 to 1x5.25 bay and many other.

Question 3

What kind of cable do I use for the fan connector?  I have an open fan port on my board but I have never seen the 4 pin connector on this unit.

This thing is not on their drawings or manuals.  iStarUSA tech support has never seen it.  It is right next to the hdd led [enable-disable] switch.  It's the same size and will accept an  IDE CD ROM analog data cable.  They said it must be a custom build.  Go figure.  I lost 3 hours obsessing over it.
